# March 1 ## Spoken on March 1 *Lectures from this day: 13 recordings* --- **[1973: Car Conversation](spoken/1973/730301cr.jkt)** > So they wanted to degraded. So the Indian culture did not allow, so the separate type of religion came out. This is the [indistinct]. They wanted, "Why there should not be meat-eating?" But Indian culture would not allow, so they become Muhammadans, they become Christians, like this. Even in India all the... What are these Muhammadans? The Muhammadans, they are lower-class man, less than *śūdra.* But Hindus, higher class, they would not touch it. But when the Muhammadans came, that "We will be on equal right," they, they become Muhammadans. > Or if they do not carry out my order, then it will be offense. Why should they put themself in such risk? Generally it is the duty of the householder to offer, "Sir, what can I do for you?" Then I can request. But if, as a beggar, I request them and they deny, then that will be great offense for them. That will not good for them. --- **[1973: Lecture](spoken/1973/730301le.jkt)** > Not only that; a devotee thinks of Kṛṣṇa because he develops love for Kṛṣṇa. And as soon as we develop our love for Kṛṣṇa, we must have to think of Kṛṣṇa. Just like we think of our lover, beloved, always; similarly, by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra* we develop our love for Kṛṣṇa. Therefore as soon as you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, you immediately remember Kṛṣṇa. That is *man-manā.* And unless I have developed devotional service, then how I can chant *Kṛṣṇa*? Just like they are chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. But I am advising everyone. But we, who others are chanting, they are not chanting, because they have no love for Kṛṣṇa. Ah. > But unfortunately, people are not prepared to accept this simple thing and make his life successful. Still we are canvassing door to door, country to country, that "You accept this process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness and you'll be happy in your life," not only this life, next life. That is is perfection of life. --- **[1973: Conversation [Hindi](spoken/1973/730301r1.jkt)** --- **[1974: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 7.1](spoken/1974/740301cc.may)** > So the author is accepting Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, *agaty-eka-gatim. Agati. Agati* means... *Gati* means movement, and *gati* means also destination. So *agati.* At the present moment, especially in this Age of Kali, people are not moving. Moving means... We are moving. This moving is not very good. Moving means material movement. Moving... We are not... Not that we are not moving, but we are moving, but *agati*—we do not know what is the destination of the movement in this age. The trees are not moving, but we are moving. But that movement has not very much improved our condition. Real movement means to go forward to reach the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is stated in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam: na te viduḥ svārtha-gatim. Svārtha-gatim*. > So *nūnaṁ pramattaḥ kurute vikarma.* Why? *Yad indriya-prītaya āpṛṇoti*. Indriya-prītaye* means for satisfaction of the senses. In the Kali-yuga, for satisfaction of the senses one can do anything, any, I mean, horrible thing, abominable thing. That is called rascaldom. They do not know what to do. So Ṛṣabhadeva says this is not good. If simply for sense gratification you are acting so whimsically, as you like, as you please, this process of activities, or *gati,* is not good. *Na sādhu manye,* Ṛṣabhadeva says, "Oh, it is not good." Why it is not good? Now, *yata...* "Because, you just try to understand, you have got this body on account of your past misdeeds, this body, this material body." These rascals, they do not know. They think that "If I get a body of a king or a rich man, that is my success." But that is not success, because you may get a king's body or very exalted body this life, but you have to change this body. That is..., you will be forced. Suppose you are very in exalted position—you are minister or king or some—but you'll not be allowed to stay. But these foolish persons, they do not know. They do not try to understand that "What is my next position?" Therefore they are called mad. *Nūnaṁ pramattaḥ kurute vi...* Madman doing, he does not know what is the ultimate goal because they do not know that there is life after death. *Tathā dehāntara-prāptiḥ*. They do not know that. Therefore they are mad after this sense gratification. --- **[1975: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 7.1](spoken/1975/750301cc.atl)** > So our proposition is that "If you have got to prepare yourself for the next life, then why don't you take the trouble of preparing for going back to home, back to Godhead?" This is our proposition. You can prepare yourself to go to hell or heaven. That doesn't matter, because that is also temporary. *Kṣīṇe puṇye punar martya-lokaṁ viṣanti*.* After you have finished... Just like you may go to jail or to somewhere else. When your visa or time is finished, then you are free from such life. Similarly, even if we go to the heavenly planet, when the resultant action of our pious activities are finished, then again we are turned down here. So in this way sometimes higher planetary, sometimes lower planetary, we are traveling. Therefore our best business is: "Why not go back to home, back to Godhead?" Kṛṣṇa says, *mad-yājino 'pi yānti mam :* "Anyone who is Kṛṣṇa conscious, he comes to Me." So why not go to Kṛṣṇa? Then the question will be: "What is the benefit of going to Kṛṣṇaloka? What is the difference between going to heavenly planet or any other planet and going to Kṛṣṇa?" The difference is, any planet you go, you are under the four material regulation, *janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi :* birth, death, old age and disease. > So in this way there are classes, *śuci* and *muci. Śuci* is the first-class cleansed internally and externally human being, and the *muci* means the low class, very unclean, eating the dead meat, cows and bulls. So Kṛṣṇa says, "Even one is fallen, he gets his birth in the family of *śuci.*" *Śucīnām.* Just like in our society there are small children. You see their behavior. They are coming, offering flower, offering obeisances. That means they are not ordinary children. They have got the opportunity to take birth in the family of Vaiṣṇava, father Vaiṣṇava, mother Vaiṣṇava. And he is getting the opportunity of Kṛṣṇa consciousness from the very beginning of life. This is called *śucīnāṁ śrīmatāṁ gehe*.* --- **[1975: Morning Walk](spoken/1975/750301mw.atl)** > Ciraṁ vicinvan,* speculating for millions of years, one cannot understand. *Athāpi te deva padāmbuja-dvaya-prasāda-leśānugṛhīta eva hi:* "One who has received a little mercy of the lotus feet of the Lord, he can understand the truth. Others, even speculating for millions of years, they cannot understand anything." The speculation business is useless in spiritual advance. It may help Darwin to come to the conclusion that man is born from monkey. Because he is from monkey, he thinks others also from monkey. He has admitted that whatever he has given, it is simply a speculation. He has admitted. And all others also speculating. They are trying to manufacture life from chemicals, but they do not know that life is never manufactured; it is already there. Just like this grass is coming. The life is already there. In favorable circumstances it comes out. *Udbhija.* This is called *udbhija.* Similarly, fermentation. Just like the cockroaches come out... [break] [end] > > athāpi te deva..., te deva padāmbuja-dvaya > > prasāda-leśānugṛhīta eva hi > > jānāti tattvaṁ... > > na cānyaeko 'pi ciraṁ vicinvan > > [1975: Room Conversation with three Trappist Monks, Psychologists from the University of Georgia, and Atlanta Lawyer Michael Green](spoken/1975/750301r1.atl)** > Therefore God says, *cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ*. The human society should be divided into four classes of men: the most intelligent class, *brāhmaṇa;* the next intelligent class, *kṣatriya;* then next intelligent class, *vaiśyas;* and the fourth-class men, who cannot become *brāhmaṇa,* neither *kṣatriya,* nor *vaiśya,* they are called *śūdra. Śūdra* is meant for giving service to the others. *Paricaryātmakaṁ karyaṁ śūdra-karma svabhāva-jam*. So in this age, ninety-nine per cent people are engaged as *śūdra,* working for others. No independence. Otherwise *brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya,* they are independent. They are nobody's servant. But at the present moment, education means how to become expert servant. That means *śūdra.* So we cannot expect any good things from *śūdra.* That is not possible. Formerly there was monarchy, and the king were called *rājarṣis,* saintly king. *Imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ*. > But we are disobeying the orders, or the rules, given by God. Instead of producing food, we are producing motorcars. And motor tires, motor parts, and so many other things. And therefore people are starving. The manual labor is being misused. We are disobeying the orders of God. Therefore we are unhappy. I have seen all over the world, there are enough space for producing food grains. And if we actually produce food grain, we can maintain ten times of the population, present population of the whole world. There is no question of scarcity, because God has created everything complete. *Pūrṇam idaṁ pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate [*Īśo,Invocation]. --- **[1975: Room Conversation with Svarūpa Dāmodara and Dr. Wolf-Rottkay](spoken/1975/750301r2.atl)** > So this is the science of living entities. What do they know? Therefore I say they are rascals. They do not know anything; simply trying to create. What is the creation? It is already there. But they do not know what is this, and still, they are scientists, they are advanced education. All rascal. They do not know. Therefore through *Bhagavad-gītā* we say they are rascal, *mūḍhā.* Now you tell these *mūḍhas* that "My dear sirs, you cannot create; neither it is created. You find out how they are coming out, what is their source, who is the brain behind all this nature. That you find out. That is knowledge. So if you struggle for this and try to find out the original source of everything, then some day you may come to this platform, *vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ*. Then you understand that Kṛṣṇa is the source of everything, and then your knowledge will be perfect." This is the... *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti*. Whatever we see, that is, the source is Vasudeva. > Do you think this nice flower has come out without any brain, this nonsense philosophy? The so-called scientist will put some bombastic word, "this, that..." What is that explanation? Nobody can understand. It will be understood by them only. They will put some language in such a way that it is to be understood by them. Unless they explain, nobody will understand. They say it is automatically being done—nature. That's not the fact. Nature is an instrument. Just like this wonderful machine, computer. But still, there is operator. But they have no common sense even that where is the machine that is working without any operator? Where is that machine within their experience? How they suggest that the nature is doing automatically? Nature is wonderful machine, but the operator is Kṛṣṇa. That is real knowledge. Because the machine is working wonderfully, there is no operator? Where is that experience? Have you got any experience, Dr. Wolf, like that? --- **[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760301mw.may)** > That is perfection. *Vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti:* "The real source is V*ā*sudeva." *Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya.* Then he glorifies V*ā*sudeva. But to know V*ā*sudeva, you make research. That is one way, going on. But if you accept... V*ā*sudeva says, "I am everything." Then accept immediately. The whole solution is there. Two, two ways: *āroha-panthā [ascending process], avaroha-panthā [descending process].* You are trying to search out. Go on. It will take many, many births. But if you accept... The same V*ā*sudeva is coming kindly, *ahaṁ sarvasya prabhavo*. > You accept it, then the knowledge is perfect. Suppose I am making this sound [makes tapping sound with cane]. Underneath they are puzzled: "Wherefrom this sound is coming?" They are making research. And if I say, "I am making this sound," then everything, knowledge, is there. The rascal will not surrender. Ask the man who is making sound; then the knowledge is perfect. But he'll make research: "Wherefrom the sound came?" This is rascaldom. And one man is suggesting, "It is... The sound may be like this. The sound may be due to this." They are going on, researching. But if I say, "You rascal, why you are contemplating like that? I made this sound like this [makes tapping sound with cane]. That's all," So that knowledge they'll not take. *Mūḍhāḥ.* Therefore they are... *Nābhijānāti. Mām ebhyaḥ param avyayam*. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.23](spoken/1976/760301sb.may)** > So Prahlāda Mahārāja is Vaiṣṇava. He could understand that "Everything in this material world, even the possession of my father, will be finished. There is no doubt. So what is the use of possessing such thing which will be finished?" *Antavanta ime dehā nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ*.* This is intelligent person decision, that "Everything in this material world—this body, or anything in relativity with this body—will be finished." Kṛṣṇa says and the devotees know it. Therefore they do not want anything of this material possession. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu teaches us to develop that mentality. "Don't want anything material possession. It is... However it may be long duration, but it will be finished. But you are eternal. *Nityasyoktāḥ śarīriṇaḥ *. You are the owner of this body. You are eternal." So we should be searching after eternal happiness, eternal life, eternal engagement. That is success of life. And if we hanker after temporary things, that is not very good intelligence. Therefore *bhakti* means when one is convinced that "Anything of this material world cannot make me happy." That is... That conviction is the beginning of pure devotion. *Anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam* [Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu*1.1.11].* You have to make zero everything material. That can be possible as we advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. > So this is experience, *dṛṣṭā...* Everyone has experience what is the situation of this material world. Every day we have seen big, big leaders, ministers. Just like in the history of the world there were so many big, big men—Hitler, Napoleon, this Churchill, Gandhi, Nehru. But all their powers, position, in one minute it becomes vanquished. There is no question... They are so proud, they do not believe in God, but when the death comes, they cannot argue anything. The death orders, "Immediately vacate"—finished. You have to vacate. At that time their power, opulence, position—nothing can help. So Kṛṣṇa says, therefore... The atheist class of men who do not believe in God, decry the authority of God, for them... Of course, everyone dies, but for them, *mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraś cāham* : --- **[1977: Room Conversation "GBC Resolutions"](spoken/1977/770301r1.may)** > Gopāla Kṛṣṇa went to Russia. He did some work. How GBC appreciate that work? Do they appreciate or not? --- **[1977: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.9.9](spoken/1977/770301sb.may)** > That is the meaning. You have to work for Kṛṣṇa sincerely, intelligently, and victory or defeat, it doesn't matter. Just like Jaṭāyu was defeated fighting with Rāvaṇa. His wings were cut off. Rāvaṇa was very strong. And Lord Rāmacandra, He did his last funeral ceremonies because he was a devotee. This is the process, not that we have to learn something extra. Whatever capacity we have got, let us decide to render service to the Lord. It doesn't require that you must be very rich or very beautiful, very bodily strong. Nothing of the sort. *Sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje ahaituky apratihatā*. In any condition, your devotional service should not be stopped. That should be the principle, that we are not going to stop, any circumstance. And Kṛṣṇa is prepared even to accept a little flower, little water. *Patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ*.* He doesn't say, "Give Me very luxurious and palatable dishes. Then I'll...," He'll be satisfied. No. The real necessity is *bhakti. Patraṁ puṣpaṁ phalaṁ toyaṁ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati.* This is real necessity—*bhaktyā. Bhaktyā mām abhijānāti yāvān yaś ca...*. > And *anuśīlanam* means activity, not that "In trance I am in meditation." That is also... Something is better than nothing, but real devotional service is activity. One must be active, and the best activity is to preach the glory of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is the best activity. *Na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu kaścin me prīya-kṛttamaḥ*. --- ## Letters on March 1 *Letters from this day: 8* --- **[1968: Letter to Acyutananda](letters/1968/680301_acyutananda)** > This means that you have become very much anxious to return back to USA, and I have become very much anxious to return back to USA, and I have also already sanctioned it, in reply to your last letter post-dated Feb. --- **[1968: Letter to Brahmananda](letters/1968/680301_brahmananda)** > About going to India, via Europe, visiting several countries, like England, Amsterdam, Germany, etc., we shall confer together when I return back to N.Y. in April; I think Janardana will also come to join in the conference. --- **[1968: Letter to Jayananda](letters/1968/680301_jayananda)** > As you have desired to liquidate the loan in respect of this purchase, I am sure Krishna will help you in this direction. --- **[1968: Letter to Manager Of Punjab National Bank](letters/1968/680301_manager_of_punjab_national_bank)** > In the meantime, I have advised you to transfer Rs 3,500 to your Brabourne Road branch for credit of my account there, and I hope you have already done this.
