## Spoken on February 5
*Lectures from this day: 6 recordings*

**[1967: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 7.39–47](spoken/1967/670205cc.sf)**
> There was a strike in Calcutta of the clerks. Jardine and Skinner, an European firm, they had many jute [indistinct]. And the clerks, I mean to say, made a strike. So when their, I mean to say, chief man met the manager, so, and asked that "Whether you want to compromise with us?" the manager said, "No. I don't wish to compromise with you. I don't care for you, because you are educated laborer." He gave the title to the clerks, "educated laborer." So actually, in Hindu society, the clerks were called educated laborer. So here it is *lekhaka śūdra. Lekhaka śūdra* means clerk, but he's *śūdra. Lekhaka śūdra śrīcandraśekhara, tāṅra ghare rahilā* [*Cc Ādi* 7.45].
> And those whose behavior is not very clean, they are called *mlecchas.* So in comparison to Hindu mode of living and others in the world, there is very great difference, social sanctity and personal sanctity. So therefore, the..., formerly the *mlecchas* means the Muhammadan, because they are meat-eaters, they do not take bath daily and there are so many things.

**[1971: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Madhya 6.142–8, Lecture in Hindi](spoken/1971/710205cc.gor)**
> So, it is the bona fide statement of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu explaining the difference between the impersonal and personal. Impersonal means the features the Supreme Lord has are nothing material. Just like yesterday we were discussing that Kṛṣṇa committed butter theft, that is not a material quality.

**[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 16.9](spoken/1975/750205bg.hon)**
> Ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt.* In the *Bhagavad-gītā* you'll find. Read *Bhagavad-gītā* very carefully. *Bhuñjate te tv aghaṁ pāpā ye pacanty ātma-kāraṇāt* : "Those who are eating and cooking for themselves, for satisfying the taste, such persons are eating the resultant action of sinful acts." They are all sinful. They are, who are cooking for themself without offering to the proprietor, to the master, they're all sinful. Therefore our program is to eat *kṛṣṇa-prasādam,* the foodstuff, remnants of foodstuff, left by Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is very kind. If you offer something to Kṛṣṇa, He eats the offering. It is not that He's not eating. He is eating, but at the same time keeping it for you as it was offered. He's not like us. If you give me something to eat, I'll finish the whole plate. Kṛṣṇa is not like that. [laughter] Kṛṣṇa... The atheist will say that He has not eaten. No, He has eaten. And that is Kṛṣṇa.
> Therefore in the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said, *mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ*. So *mahātmās... Mahātmās* means those who have realized God, not this politician *mahātmā.* No. *Mahātmā* means... *Mahātmās'* description is there in the *Bhagavad-gītā, mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ*: "They are under the spiritual energy." They are not under the material energy. They are not *mahātmā;* they are demons. So we are describing about the demons. Under the spiritual energy, one can understand his position, his relationship with God. Therefore it is said, *mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha daivīṁ prakṛtim āśritāḥ.* And what is the sign? *Bhajanty ananya-manaso jñātvā mām, avyayam.* Their business is *bhajana. Bhajana* means *bhakti. Bhaja-dhātu.* From *bhajana, bhakti,* and *bhajana, bhakti, bhaj-dhātu. Bhaja sevanam. Bhaj-dhātu* means offering service, rendering service. So *bhakti, bhajana, bhakta, bhāgavata—*they are coming from the same root, *bhaja-dhātu,* Sanskrit, those who know Sanskrit.

**[1976: Sannyāsa Initiation of Viraha Prakāśa Swami](spoken/1976/760205in.may)**
> So not only... We are trying to create a position that not only the Indians have got this responsibility, but according to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, anyone—*pṛthivīte āche yata nagarādi grāma* [*CB Antya-khaṇḍa* 4.126]*—*they should take up this missionary work. And I am so much obliged to you, you American boys and girls also, that you have taken this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement very seriously. And by the grace of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu you are taking *sannyāsa,* some of you. Keep it very perfectly and go from town to town, city to city, village to village, all over the world and spread this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement so that everyone will be happy. People are very much suffering. They, because they are *mūḍhās,* rascals, they do not know how to adjust living condition in human form. This is the *bhāgavata-dharma* everywhere. So the human form is not to become a dog, hog, pig. You should become a perfect human being. *Śuddhyet sattva.* Purify your existence. Why you are subjected to birth, death, old age and disease? Because we are impure. Now, if we purify our existence, then there will be no such thing as birth, death, old age and disease. That is the version of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Kṛṣṇa Himself. Simply by understanding Kṛṣṇa, you become purified and you escape the contamination of birth, death, old age and disease.
> Those who are completely dedicated to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa in service are actually *sannyāsīs.* As a matter of formality, the devotee accepts the *sannyāsa* dress as previous *ācāryas* did. He also accepts the three *daṇḍas.* Later, Viṣṇu Svāmī considered that accepting the dress of a *tridaṇḍa* was *parātma-niṣṭhā.* Therefore sincere devotees add another *daṇḍa,* the *jīva daṇḍa,* to the three existing *daṇḍas.* The Vaiṣṇava *sannyāsī* is known as *tridaṇḍī-sannyāsī.* The Māyāvādī *sannyāsī* accepts only one *daṇḍa,* not understanding the purpose of *tridaṇḍa.* Later, many persons in the community of Śiva Svāmī gave up the *ātma-niṣṭhā,* devotional service of the Lord, and followed the paths of Śaṅkarācārya. Instead of accepting 108 names, those in the Śiva Svāmī*sampradāya* follow the path of Śaṅkarācārya and accept the ten names of *sannyāsa.* Although Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted the then existing order of *sannyāsa,* namely *ekadaṇḍa,* He still recited from *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* about the *tridaṇḍa-sannyāsa* accepted by the *brāhmaṇa* of Avantīpura. Indirectly He declared that within the *ekadaṇḍa* [one *daṇḍa*], four *daṇḍas* existed as one. Accepting *ekadaṇḍa sannyāsa* without *parātma-niṣṭhā,* devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa, is not acceptable to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. In addition, according to the exact regulative principles, one should add the *jīva-daṇḍa* to the *tridaṇḍa.* These four *daṇḍas* bound together as one are symbolic of unalloyed devotional service to the Lord. Because the *ekadaṇḍī-sannyāsīs* of the Māyāvāda school are not devoted to the service of Kṛṣṇa, they try to merge into the Brahman effulgence, which is a marginal position between material and spiritual existence. They accept this impersonal position as liberation. Māyāvādī *sannyāsīs,* not knowing that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was a *tridaṇḍī,* think of Caitanya Mahāprabhu as an *ekadaṇḍī sannyāsī.* This is due to their *vivarta,* bewilderment. In *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* there is no such thing as *ekadaṇḍī sannyāsī.* Indeed, the *tridaṇḍī-sannyāsī* is accepted as the symbolic representation of the *sannyāsa* order. By citing this verse from *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu accepted the *sannyāsa* order recommended in *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.* The Māyāvādī *sannyāsīs,* who are enamored of the external energy of the Lord, cannot understand the mind of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

**[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760205mw.may)**
> That is said, *varṇāśrama-dharma.* Therefore, according to Vedic civilization, unless one comes to the regulation of *varṇāśrama-dharma,* that is not human civilization. That is actually the fact. That is the same dog's society. That is going on. If there is no *brāhmaṇa,* qualified *brāhmaṇa,* who will give direction? There is no... If there is no *kṣatriya,* then who will give protection? If there is no *vaiśya,* then who will produce food? And if there is no *śūdra,* then who will work for general assistance? This is scientific.
> A living entity means *ānandamaya,* enjoyment. But that *ānanda,* where it is permanent *ānanda,* how we have to reach that permanent *ānanda,* that is being taught. Otherwise, you foolish, you'll eat the whole medicine and die. That's all. Therefore the *varṇāśrama-dharma. Varṇāśrama-dharma* means that is real human civilization. There is direction that "You enjoy like this." And if you become *mlecchas* and *yavanas,* then you'll not enjoy. You'll simply suffer. You do not know how to enjoy.
