## Spoken on January 30
*Lectures from this day: 13 recordings*

**[1971: Lecture by Haṁsadūta in Śrīla Prabhupāda's Presence](spoken/1971/710130l2.all)**
> And therefore He was sometimes criticised for doing this. He was asked why instead of studying Vedānta and being very sober and grave He was always seen chanting and dancing with musical instruments. And Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied very humbly that, "My spiritual master he found Me a fool and he told Me not to touch Vedānta, he told Me not to play with Vedānta, but he told Me to simply chant this Hare Krishna *mantra* and it will make You all perfect." So Caitanya Mahāprabhu is no fool because He is Kṛṣṇa himself, according to *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam*.
> So He presented himself as one of us, as a fool, because in this age everyone is foolish. In the Age of Kali everyone is a fool, so He presented himself simply for the matter of teaching. Just like the teacher writes A, B, C, on the blackboard but the teacher is not learning ABC. The teacher is giving examples. Similarly Caitanya Mahāprabhu He taught by example how to worship Kṛṣṇa in this age and His teachings, the main teaching of Caitanya Mahāprabhu is simply by chanting and dancing, taking *prasādam* and hearing from scriptures like *Bhagavad-gītā* and *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* we can achieve the perfection of human life which is to love God, love of God, Kṛṣṇa *bhakti*.
---
**[1971: Lecture at Māgha-melā](spoken/1971/710130l3.all)**
> Malinterpretation will not help you to understand what is *Bhagavad-gītā*. As Śrīmān Haṁsadūta has said, just to understand *Bhagavad-gītā*, one has to become a devotee of Kṛṣṇa; otherwise there is no scope of understanding. Because in the beginning the Lord says that "This system of disciplic chain of succession is now broken. Therefore I am speaking the same *yoga* system, *Bhagavad-gītā*, unto you, Arjuna."
> Therefore Kṛṣṇa's name is Asamordhva. There is nobody equal to Him, nobody greater than Him. Everyone is servant of Him. That is explained in the *Caitanya-caritāmṛta: ekale īśvara kṛṣṇa, āra saba bhṛtya* [*Cc Ādi* 5.142]. Only the supreme master, controller, is Kṛṣṇa, and everyone is servant. Our position is servant. Therefore Caitanya Mahāprabhu says, *jīvera 'svarūpa' haya-kṛṣṇera 'nitya-dāsa'*.
---
**[1971: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya 19.149 in Hindi](spoken/1971/710130l4.all)**
> Somewhere it has been said suprasīdati and somewhere suprasīdati, this means whatever path of religion you follow, regardless of who you are a Hindu, a Muslim, Christian doesn't matter. The test is that upon following that path of religion, the success will be determined whether or not you achieved devotional service unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And what kind of devotional service? *Ahaituki* without any selfish motive, there should be no ulterior motive and neither there is any restriction. It cannot be said that one cannot render devotional service because he is just to poor, or that one is too foolish, or a *mleccha*, or some other reason, a person can give many excuses. But these are material reasons and cannot hinder devotional service. There is no material condition which can check the progress of devotional service. All one needs to do is to engage his consciousness in the work of devotional service. then even if one is locked up air tight, there is no difficulty for God to reach you, because since the soul is *sarva gā*, so is the Supersoul. Just like Kṛṣṇa says *tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti*, as one gives up his body...
> Only the person whose mind is not flickering can reestablish his relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and how to control the mind, is there in the yoga system, *yoga indriya-saṁyamya, yoga* is specifically meant for controlling the senses. This is real yoga, to control the senses and engage them in the service of Kṛṣṇa *sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa*, actually this is the basis of all spiritual practices. Those who have reestablished their connection with Kṛṣṇa they can engage their mind constantly at His lotus feet, he no longer has the need to perform any further austerity. He is supposed to have achieved the fruit of all austerities *ārādhito yadi haris tapasā tataḥ kim*, if someone has achieved Kṛṣṇa and awakened his dormant God consciousness, it is not like one speaks to God face to face, that is bogus, because in our current condition we cannot see God.
---
**[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.2.46 Māgha-melā](spoken/1971/710130sb.pra)**
> A similar thing. *Paramaṁ guhyaṁ* is most confidential, that this teaching of Lord Kṛṣṇa, that "You give up all religion, all occupation," *sarva-dharmān parityajya*. "Simply surrender unto Me." It is possible... It is not possible to take this advantage by everyone. It is practical. If I would have said that "You give up Christian religion and you take to this Kṛṣṇa consciousness" in the first, you would have immediately left the meeting. So it is very confidential; it is not to be opened immediately. When gradually one comes to confidence, then it will be clear. Therefore it is called.
> Kṛṣṇa is known as, therefore, out of His sixty-four qualities, His one quality is *vāvadūka*. That is explained in our *Nectar of Devotion,* you will see. That means He could talk with any living entity. Why not? If He is the father of every living entity, why He is not able to understand the language of every living entity? That is natural. Is it not a fact that a father understands the language of his son? Naturally, if Kṛṣṇa is the father of all living entities, it is natural for Him to understand all the languages of birds, bees, trees, man—everyone. Therefore Kṛṣṇa's another quality is *bahudak*.
---
**[1973: Lecture at Bhārata Chamber of Commerce "Culture and Business"](spoken/1973/730130le.cal)**
> So business, we mean..., business means the occupational duty. According to our Vedic culture, there are different types of businesses. As it is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā, cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgasaḥ* —*the four divisions of social system, namely the *brāhmaṇa,* the *kṣatriya,* the *vaiśya* and the *śūdra.* Before doing business, there must be a division who can do what kind of business. There are different businesses. Now we have taken that everyone should take everyone's business. That is not very scientifical division. Therefore there is cultural division.
> Now the animal life, there is no cultivation of spiritual life. That is not possible. The animal cannot cultivate this knowledge. The human being, if they do not cultivate spiritual knowledge, they're exactly like animals. *Dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ.* So we should be very conscious about our eternal existence. *Na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre*. Nityaḥ śāśvato 'yam.* We, spirit soul, we are eternal. We are not going to die after the annihilation of this body. This is the cultivation of knowledge. This is called *brahma-jijñāsā:* to know about one's self.
---
**[1973: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1973/730130nd.cal)**
> Ordinary man, they are after *dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa.* First of all, nowadays, even they do not care for *dharma.* They're animals. Really human life begins when they take to religious principle. *Dharmeṇa hīnāḥ paśubhiḥ samānāḥ* [*Hitopadeśa* 25]. So *dharma-artha-kāma-mokṣa,* gradually improvement, and devotional service is above *mokṣa.* Therefore *dharmaḥ projjhita-kaitavo atra* . Kaitavo,* cheating. As soon as there is some motive, that is cheating religion. But *bhakti,* there is no such thing, *dharma, artha, kāma, mokṣa.* It is above, transcendental.
> So Vaiṣṇava is not envious. If somebody advances more than him, he appreciates: "Oh, he's so nice that he has advanced more than me. I could not serve Kṛṣṇa in such a nice way." That is Vaiṣṇavism. And if one is envious—"Oh, this man is going so fast. Let him..., let us put some impediments on this path"—he's not Vaiṣṇava; he's *hīnasya jantuḥ.* He's animal. Vaiṣṇava cannot be envious. Therefore Vaiṣṇava cult... This is *paramo nirmatsarāṇām*. No *matsaratā,* no enviousness. *Satām,* devotees. Devotees means he must be *nirmatsara.*

**[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740130mw.tok)**
> > cīrāṇi kiṁ pathi na santi diśanti bhikṣāṁ
> > naivāṅghripāḥ para-bhṛtaḥ sarito 'py aśuṣyan
> > ruddhā guhāḥ kim ajito 'vati nopasannān
> > kasmād bhajanti kavayo dhana-durmadāndhān
> > > This is the formula given by Śukadeva Gosvāmī. *Cīrāṇi kiṁ pathi na santi:* whether old garment are not thrown in the street. Formerly, in your country—in America also they do so—anything old they throw away in the street, even furniture, carpet. So this was the system. Old garments, clothing, they would be thrown in the street, so that any poor man can collect, pick up. *Cīrāṇi. Cīrāṇi* means old garments, *kiṁ na pathi santi.*

**[1974: Room Conversation](spoken/1974/740130r1.tok)**
> That has spoiled the whole spiritual life of the present humanity. Everyone manufactures his own way. There is no... If you learn to typewriting, you have to learn systematically: this finger here, this finger... Not that this finger there, this finger there. That is nonsense. You cannot do anything whimsically. This is nonsense. You have to learn systematically, scientifically. Then you are actually learned in that subject matter. And that is the Vedic injunction: *tad-vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet samit-pāṇiḥ.* Do you read *Bhagavad-gītā*? No. You don't require to read anything; you have perfect devotion. This is spoiled. Human life is so valuable, and in this life you can realize God, you can make solution of all your problems. And if you do whimsically and spoil your life, then the valuable, duration of life, this is not very good thing. If you manufacture, "This man is better devotee," how do you know he's a better devotee? You do not know. This is not the way. If you want to be educated, you must admit yourself as a student in a school, then in a college, then in a university. And if you say, "No, no. I don't care for anything. I know everything. This is best school; this is better school," what is this? A teacher who has refused training of the spiritual master, how he can become a teacher? *Evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ*.
> Everything must be... So we do not hate anything, because we know that everything has got relationship with Kṛṣṇa. And if that thing is engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service, that is perfect. That is perfect. We are using everything—the electricity, the Dictaphone, the table—but we are not using it for sense gratification. Every moment we are engaged. *Avyartha-kālatvam*, that is higher advance, that "This time I have passed, what I have done for Kṛṣṇa?" This is character of advancement: "What I have done for Kṛṣṇa? What I have done for my Guru Mahārāja?" If in this way we lead our life, that is perfect. That is perfect. "Guru Mahārāja has entrusted me with this business. How far I have done this?" that is perfect.
---
**[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.16.36](spoken/1974/740130sb.tok)**
> Kṛṣṇa says that "I am equal to everyone." If God is not equal to everyone, then how He can be God? He is God, who is equal. *Na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ.* So when God is killing somebody and God is patting something, er, somebody, that does not mean He has got two equal behavior for two persons. No. His behavior is the same: affection. But to kill this demon means to stop him from further sinful activities and get him..., give him release from the sinful activities he has done. Therefore it is His mercy. But one has to study very carefully. Because God is absolute, there is no difference between His activities killing the demon and giving protection to a devotee. He is giving protection to the demon also, by killing him. But one cannot understand.
> So Mahārāja Parīkṣit, *parīkṣit nāma rājarṣiḥ.* In those days all the kings were like saintly persons. They are not ordinary person. Why saintly person required? Because saintly person means he knows what is actually good and what is not good. The actually good of human life is that he's engaged in developing devotional service. That is actually good. In another place of this *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* it is stated, *sa vai puṁsāṁ paro dharmo yato bhaktir adhokṣaje*. Paro dharmaḥ. Para* means superior, transcendental, or which is *para* and *apara. Bara* and *abara,* these words are used. *Bara* means greater, and *abara* means lower, and *para* means superior and *apara* means inferior. Here it is spoken, "There are many types of religious system, but they are *apara,* not very good, inferior, inferior type." Religion cannot be inferior, but it is sometimes made into inferiority because without such kind inferior type of religion, the inferior class of men will not accept it, will not accept it.
---
**[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 16.4](spoken/1975/750130bg.hon)**
> But He is very much pleased with the devotee. Therefore, his supplies are very immediate; and the demonic supply, that will depend on his work, *karma.* It will depend on the *karma.* And devotee's supply, because this is *bhakti,* it is immediately there. That is the difference. Kṛṣṇa says that. *Ye tu bhajanti māṁ prītyā teṣu te mayi.* There are millions of living beings. Some of them are devotees, and many of them are nondevotees. So Kṛṣṇa is kind to the nondevotees also. Whatever he wants, He will give him. But the necessities of the devotee is the first consideration for Kṛṣṇa. *Ye tu bhajanti māṁ prītyā teṣu te mayi.* That is Kṛṣṇa's... As the devotee is only searching the opportunity how to serve Kṛṣṇa, similarly, Kṛṣṇa is also very eager to serve the devotee. That is a reciprocation of devotional service.
> So first of all we must decide what we want. Whatever you want, you will have. Kṛṣṇa is very kind. If you want to remain bound up by the laws of material nature within this material world... *Kāraṇaṁ guṇa-saṅgo 'sya*.* As we contaminate the different material modes of nature, we get different situation of life, different forms of body, different circumstances. Kṛṣṇa has arranged everything very accurate. His arrangement is very perfect. *Parāsya śaktir vividhaiva śrūyate* [Cc Madhya*13.65*,purport]. When He does something, He desires only. By His desires, the energies are there. Immediately the energy works. Just like you have got some energy. If you desire, immediately it begins to work. You have got experience. Similarly, we have got limited number of energies, and Kṛṣṇa has got unlimited number of energies. So if we desire to become something unlimitedly, Kṛṣṇa can supply you your necessities unlimitedly. *Ye yathā māṁ prapadyante*.* That freedom is there. If you want to remain as a demon, then Kṛṣṇa will supply you all the ingredients, how you can flourish as a demon.
