**Prabhupāda:** > oṁ ajñāna timirāndhasya > jñānāñjana śalākayā > cakṣur unmīlitaṁ yena > tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ > [Śrī guru-praṇāma]
Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen, I thank you very much for your kindly inviting me. I'll serve you to my capacity. Today's subject matter is "Culture and Business."
So business, we mean..., business means the occupational duty. According to our Vedic culture, there are different types of businesses. As it is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā, cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgasaḥ* [[bg/4/13|[Bg. 4.13] ]]—*the four divisions of social system, namely the *brāhmaṇa,* the *kṣatriya,* the *vaiśya* and the *śūdra.* Before doing business, there must be a division who can do what kind of business. There are different businesses. Now we have taken that everyone should take everyone's business. That is not very scientifical division. Therefore there is cultural division.

**Bhavānanda:** [reading] "...devotee is so much attracted to glorification of the pastimes, name, qualities, forms and so forth of the Lord that the devotee does not care for *mukti.* Śrī Bilvamaṅgala Ṭhākura has said, 'If I am engaged in devotional service unto You, my dear Lord, then very easily can I perceive Your presence everywhere. And as far as liberation is concerned, I think liberation stands at my door with folded hands, waiting to serve me.' "
**Prabhupāda:** Yes. By chanting the *mantra,* Hare Kṛṣṇa *mantra, ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam* [[cc/antya/20/12|[Cc. Antya 20.12] ]]:* gradually we become cleansed of all dirty things within our heart. Thus our mind becomes purified. And in the purified condition of the mind we can think of Kṛṣṇa rightly. In this way, Kṛṣṇa becomes practically dependent on the devotees. Kṛṣṇa is the master, controller of everything, but to the pure devotee He becomes dependent. So why the pure devotee will ask for anything else?
*Adurlabham ātma-bhaktau.* For a devotee, Kṛṣṇa is within the palms of a devotee. *Ajita, jito 'py asau.* Although Kṛṣṇa is not conquerable, but He likes to be conquered by His devotee. That is the position. Just like He willingly placed Himself to be conquered by Mother Yaśodā, to be conquered by Rādhārāṇī, to be conquered by His friends. Kṛṣṇa became defeated, and He has to take His friend on the shoulder. Practically sometimes we see that a king keeps a joker amongst his associates, and sometimes the joker insults the king, and the king enjoys.

Devotee (1): ...as a religious organization, so for a society to be registered we have to own the property. So we purchased a house, and I think that we are going to have to keep a Deity in this..., in this temple or this house out there. Otherwise they won't accept it as a religious organization.
Devotee (1): So it is going to be difficult for us to do proper worship for two Deities at once. Is it possible to keep a Deity in the house and just perform *maṅgala-arotika,* and then the rest of the day have it sit?
Devotee (1): At the moment it is difficult. We are so far away from this temple, about..., about two hours by train.

**Devotee:** According to him, he hasn't disobeyed the regulative principles of eating meat, intoxication, sex life. But he has some fantasyland in his mind, which he tries to live in.
**Prabhupāda:** [indistinct] So you have to learn so many things. Don't confuse yourself as authority. Then you will be misled. Therefore one has to accept a *guru*, just to give him direct. Anything, any field of activity, if one is know...*Ācāryavān puruṣo veda* [*Chāndogya Upaniṣad*]. One who is being directed by *ācārya,* he knows things. Not a vagabond. *Ācāryavān puruṣo veda*. Why one goes to college, school? Just to follow the instruction of the teacher, and then he becomes educated. This is the general method. Anything you want to learn, you have to approach a person who knows the thing. Whimsically, if you create something in your mind, that is a madman's theory. The Vedic injunction is, *tad-vijñānārthaṁ sa gurum evābhigacchet* [*Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad* 1.2.12].
You have to, if we are going to learn the supreme science, science of God... In ordinary life, if we want to learn how to typewrite, I have to go to a typewriting school and to put this finger that way, put this finger that way. We have to learn in that way. And if we are going to learn Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Lord, you don't require anyone's help: "Let us do anything whimsically, that is all right." It is simply ludicrous, that's all.

**Prabhupāda:** So there are others coming? Eh? Where is Sañjaya? Class, not always everyone attends?
**Translation:** "While the earth and the personality of religion were thus engaged in conversation, the saintly king Mahārāja Parīkṣit reached the shore of the Sarasvatī River, which flowed towards the east."

[break] *[02:01]* "Arrogance, pride, anger, conceit, harshness and ignorance—these qualities belong to those of demoniac nature, O son of Pṛthā."
**Prabhupāda:** > dambho darpo 'bhimānaś ca > krodhaḥ pāruṣyam eva ca > ajñānaṁ cābhijātasya > pārtha sampadam āsurīm > [[bg/16/4|[Bg. 16.4] ]]
We have discussed last night some of the divine characteristics, and *abhayaṁ sattva-saṁśuddhiḥ,* like that, sixteen divine characteristics. And here the demonic characteristics. We can understand a thing by analysis of characteristics. In the chemical laboratory, things are tested by characteristics. Just like this chemical: "Color is like this. Shape is like this. Then taste is like this. Then chemical reaction is like this." They are stated for each and every chemical, and we can understand the purity by the characteristic. The characteristic is also called *dharma.* Just like a snake. The snake characteristic is that unnecessarily, without any offense, it bites, and the animal which is bitten, he dies. This is the characteristic. Without any fault... The snake is going, and the other animal is going. Go, but the characteristic of snake is unnecessarily bites. This is the characteristic.
