# January 29 ## Spoken on January 29 *Lectures from this day: 10 recordings* --- **[1971: Lecture at the House of Mr. Mitra](spoken/1971/710129le.all)** > The... Therefore this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is very essential to preach that the supreme enjoyer is Kṛṣṇa, or God. He is the proprietor of everything, *sarva-loka-maheśvaram*—not only of this planet; there are millions and trillions of universes, and in each universe there are millions and trillions of planets. All of them, they are..., the proprietor, the only proprietor, is Kṛṣṇa. The trouble is that we are creating false proprietorship; therefore instead of being united we are being disunited, and the flags are increasing. That's all. Competition. > So this human being, human society, also becomes simply busy with these four principles of bodily demands, he is no more than an animal. He may be very polished animal, but if we simply follow these four principles of life, demands of this body, then we are simply animal. The only... Therefore *Vedānta-sūtra* says, *athāto brahma-jijñāsā:* now, in this human form of life, one should be inquisitive to understand what is Brahman. That is the first business of human society. But they have now forgotten. --- **[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.2.45 Māgha-melā](spoken/1971/710129sb.pra)** > In the *Bhagavad-gītā* it is said, *pratyakṣāvagamaṁ dharmyaṁ*. In other methods of self-realization, namely *karma*, *jñāna*, *yoga,* you are not able to test whether you are actually making progress. But *bhakti-yoga* is so perfect that you can practically examine yourself whether you are making progress or not. > According to this formula, the system of arranged marriage of the boys and the girls is recommended, although that is not the guarantee; real thing is association. But still, when the boys and girls are grown, up it is a custom in Hindu society to get them married so that they may not fall prey to the prostitute or illicit sex life. That is very dangerous, such falling down. That is clearly stated here. Śrīdhara Swami says,* [Sanskrit] *Sva-dāra. Sva* means calm; *dāra* means wife. So there is regulative principles how to remain husband and wife peacefully. --- **[1973: University Lecture](spoken/1973/730129le.cal)** > Our Vedic culture is divided into four *varṇas: brāhmaṇa kṣatriya vaiśya śūdra.* Unfortunately, we are simply manufacturing *śūdras,* not *brāhmaṇas.* That is the defect of modern education. *Śūdra, śūdra* means *paricaryātmakam kāryaṁ śūdra karma svabhāva-jam*. After education, everyone is hankering after a service. That is *śūdra karma svabhāva-jam.* This is not perfect education. There must be *brāhmaṇas,* who are independent. Cāṇakya Paṇḍita, whose name is still, still celebrated, he was prime minister of Mahārāja Candragupta, but he was not accepting a single paisa as salary. > So that is lamentable. Now Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mission is being spread all over the world, but our Indian brothers are not joining, although it is the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. *Bhārata-bhūmite manuṣya janma haila yāra.* He requested to the humankind who has taken birth in this land, in this *puṇya-bhūmi,* Bhārata-varṣa. Not to the cats and dogs, but to the human being. That time has come now. If you want to prove that you are actually human being in this land, then you must take seriously the mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and spread all over the world. That is the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. --- **[1973: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1973/730129nd.cal)** > Therefore one should concentrate upon devotional service. Everything is there. *Sarvārhaṇam acyutejyā*. If you..., one is devotee of Acyuta, everything is complete there. And he's *śānta.* He does not require it. He does not endeavor for it. But because he's *kṛṣṇa-bhakta,* everything follows him. Everything follows him. That *ānanda* is nice. There is no need of showing magic or renouncing this world or accepting this world. These things are not required by *kṛṣṇa-bhakta.* Because if he accepts, it is for Kṛṣṇa. If he rejects, that is for Kṛṣṇa. *Ānukūlyasya saṅkalpa prātikūlyaṁ vivarjanam.* We advise, "Give up this habit. No illicit sex, no intoxication, no gambling, no meat-eating." So this is *tyāga.* Why *tyāga*? For Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa wants this. Kṛṣṇa does not want to see us debauchers. Therefore we must give it up. And Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī mām...*. We accept it. > Real enjoyment is devotion. There is a very practical example: Just like if you get all of a sudden a certain amount of money, say, one hundred rupees' note lying on the street, if you get... Or lying here. So if you take it, your conscience will beat, because that does not belong to you; you have picked up. You'll always think, "Oh, I am taking somebody's money. Whose money it was? I'm doing some sinful." In this way, your mind will disturb. So that is the taking. And similarly, if you don't take, if you leave it there, then you'll also be disturbed. You'll think, "Somebody has left this money here. So I did not collect it. Somebody will collect it, and he will take it away. This is not nice." The best thing is that you pick it up and if you deliver to the person who has lost the money or who has left that money. Three things. The one thing is *bhoga,* if you take yourself. And if you don't take, that is *tyāga.* And if you pick it up and deliver to the right person, that is devotion. --- **[1974: Arrival](spoken/1974/740129ar.tok)** > So, so long our mind will be absorbed in the bodily concept of life, we have to accept another body after death. And to accept another body means great trouble. Just like this child, when he was within the womb of the mother for ten months, packed up... Of course, by nature's arrangement one can live, but actually it is very troublesome. Then after coming out of the body, the child is helpless. He cannot express these troubles—sometimes cry. If mother is careful, takes care; otherwise he is in great trouble. Suppose some ant is biting, he cannot express; he cries simply, and mother also cannot detect why the child is crying. This is the position. In this way, again growing up, no child wants to go to the school—he is forced to go to the school. Then when he is grown up, again family man to take responsibility of family. > So the whole life is struggle for existence, then old age, so many disease, frustration, and again death. Again death means again enter into the mother's womb, again packed up, again come out, and that is also not sure what kind of body he is going to get next. There are 8,400,000 forms of bodies, and we can get any one of them. So this change of body is not very good job, but people do not know the science. They are ignorant of this transmigration of the soul, and they are working hard, dying, again taking birth—not as human being; maybe human being or more than human being, or cats and dogs, trees, there's so many. So this is our real problem. In ignorance we accept one kind of body and stay for some time; again we are kicked out—no permanent situation. In this way we are under threefold miserable conditions offered by the material nature. --- **[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 16.1–3](spoken/1975/750129bg.hon)** > Therefore we are presenting *Bhagavad-gītā As It Is—*as it is, without any change. Kṛṣṇa says, *man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṁ namaskuru* : "Just become My devotee. Always think of Me." We are teaching the same thing. We have no difficulty. What we are requesting you? "You think of Kṛṣṇa. Chant Hare Kṛṣṇa." That's all. Where is the difficulty? We don't say, "You think of that, this of that, to this demigod, that demigod." No. We don't say. What is the use of other demigod? We show all respect to everyone, even to the ant, but that does not mean that any demigod, any damn, any rascal, should be worshiped as God? No. That is not possible. We can show respect even to the insignificant ant. *Tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā* [*Cc Ādi* 17.31, *Śikṣāṣṭaka* 3]. > So this is going on perpetually. Not perpetually—at least for many, many millions of years, for many, many millions of years. But we are, because we are fool, especially in this Age of Kali, we do not understand it. Therefore it is said, *sattva-saṁśuddhiḥ.* You require to be cured of your this disease, ignorance. That is called... Just like when you become infected with some disease, you go to a physician, and he gives you some injection or some medicine so that you may be cured of the extra fever or extra pain due to your disease. Similarly, those who are advanced in knowledge, their *sattva,* existence, is cured. That we require. Or everyone requires to be cured of this disease of ignorance. The ignorance, disease of ignorance, means "I am this body. I am this body." I am not this body. --- **[1977: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1](spoken/1977/770129bg.bhu)** > > mayy āsakta-manāḥ pārtha > yogaṁ yuñjan mad-āśrayaḥ > asaṁśayam samagraṁ māṁ > yathā jñāsyasi tac chṛṇu > [[bg/7/1|[Bg. 7.1] ]] The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān, personally speaking how you can understand Him perfectly. Many men have dedicated their lives for many engagements in the name of philanthrophy, altruism, nationalism, humanitarianism and so on, but all of them will be finished along with the end of life of this body. Our dedication of life or Krishna-ism, on the other hand, will continue eternally and give us eternal life, bliss and knowledge. --- **[1970: Letter to Tamala Krsna](letters/1970/700129_tamala_krsna)** > I have not received any letter from you in several weeks. Gargamuni also has not received any letter from you. --- **[1972: Letter to Satsvarupa](letters/1972/720129_satsvarupa)** > From the date you received the money from Karandhara you have six months to repay. There is no question of personal desires. You are a sincere boy and I give you all my blessings to go ahead with this project. --- **[1973: Letter to Amogha](letters/1973/730129_amogha)** > As far as the dates of the programs, that you must arrange with Madhudvisa Swami as we shall be coming to Indonesia via Australia and New Zealand and then shall be returning to Calcutta by March 1 for beginning preparations for our Mayapur function. So I shall be looking forward very much to seeing you shortly, and at that time we may discuss things at further length. --- **[1973: Letter to Ksirodakasayi](letters/1973/730129_ksirodakasayi)** > 85, Duddon Hill Lane, London N.W. Simply grhastha means that he lives outside the temple with wife, that is the only difference. Otherwise grhastha must follow the same regulative principles and remain fully engaged in the temple activities. --- **[1973: Letter to Ram Prashad](letters/1973/730129_ram_prashad)** > I am sorry to note that you have not yet received your life membership cards or receipt as yet. I have sent your letter to Bombay and directed the President, Sriman Tulasi dasa, to immediately send you the same. --- **[1973: Letter to Sukadeva 2](letters/1973/730129_sukadeva_2)** > This attitude of serving first the spiritual master is the correct one, for only by the mercy of the spiritual master can one obtain the mercy of Krsna. --- **[1976: Letter to Aksayananda](letters/1976/760129_aksayananda)** > I have read the letter of Mr. I know that Temple, it is very famous. Now the devotees must learn so that in the future professionals will not be required. --- **[1976: Letter to Dr. Wolf](letters/1976/760129_dr._wolf)** > The Srimad-Bhagavatam says if there is a real presentation of spiritual understanding, then even if it is presented i broken language, it is accepted by high, saintly persons, because it glorifies the Supreme Person. On the other hand, if literature is highly metaphorically composed, if it does not glorify the Lord, it is compared to a place inhabited by the crows. --- **[1976: Letter to Hansadutta](letters/1976/760129_hansadutta)** > Your struggle in Germany is the struggle between Hiranyakasipu and Prahlada Maharaja, and Prahlada Maharaja must come out triumphant. When there is so much interference on the part of Kamsa, Krishna must come out victorious, and kill Kamsa. --- **[1976: Letter to Karandhara](letters/1976/760129_karandhara)** > The murti of the Spiritual Master should be treated as good as the Deity. *Saksad-dharitvena samasta-sastrair, uktas tatha bhavyata eva sadbhih/kintu prabhor yah priya eva tasya,* The guru should be treated as good as God. --- **[1976: Letter to Svarupa Damodara](letters/1976/760129_svarupa_damodara)** > If you cannot come to India there is no harm. --- **[1977: Letter to Charles Gold](letters/1977/770129_charles_gold)** > Krsna Consciousness is based on perfect information received from Krsna in Vedic literatures like Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. Our method is not the so-called research conducted by imperfect beings by their imperfect senses and mental speculation. It is difficult to understand why this inductive process is being credited as the highest form of knowledge, since the material scientists who follow this method are not able to do anything towards solving the basic problems of humanity. --- **[1977: Letter to Jayapataka](letters/1977/770129_jayapataka)** > Our plan is to arrive in Calcutta on the morning of February 4th; after a day or two, we will come to Mayapur. --- **[1977: Letter to Prity Ghose](letters/1977/770129_prity_ghose)** > Please accept my greetings. I have received your letter of January 5, 1977, and appreciate your offer to perform Krishna Lila dance and music in connection with our ISKCON Movement. It will not, however, be possible for us to pay your passage fare in touring. If you can still join us, you will receive all other facilities, room and board at our centers. But I don't know whether you are accustomed to following the regulative principles for stay in our centers, such as no meat eating, no intoxication, no illicit sex, no gambling. Otherwise, we can supply your needs, and we also have a dance and theater troupe coming from New York to perform at our Bombay center. If you can cooperate with our troupe we can have many presentations from Krsna Leela, Ramayana, etc. We are attempting to establish the movement of pure devotional service to Lord Krsna all over the world, and we welcome your joining us in this endeavor which will bring the highest benefit to the suffering humanity. --- **[1977: Letter to Ramesvara](letters/1977/770129_ramesvara)** > He has done this expertly, in the style of "The Reader's Digest", taking articles from different newspapers. ---
