## Spoken on January 27
*Lectures from this day: 8 recordings*

**[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1](spoken/1973/730127bg.cal)**
> He's the cause of all causes. This is the *śāstric* injunction. So if you take this movement very seriously, the world will be happy, we'll be happy, personally or socially or economically, politically... That's a fact. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja*. If we accept Kṛṣṇa, simply Kṛṣṇa, then you understand everything *asaṁśayam,* without any doubt; *samagram,* in fullness. *Yasmin vijñāte sarvam idaṁ vijñātaṁ bhavati* [*Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad* 1.3].
> So in that chaotic condition you cannot understand what is God, what is Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, *manuṣyāṇāṁ sahasreṣu:* out of many, many thousands and millions of people, one takes to the scientific institute of *varṇāśrama-dharma.* That means followers of the *Vedas,* strictly. Out of these persons who are following the Vedic principles, mostly they're attached to *karma-kāṇḍa,* ritualistic ceremonies. So out of many millions of persons engaged in ritualistic ceremony, one becomes advanced in knowledge. They are called *jñānī,* or speculative philosopher. Not *karmīs,* but *jñānī.* So out of many millions of such *jñānīs,* one becomes *mukta,* liberated.

**[1973: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1973/730127nd.cal)**
> Tat-tat-karma-pravartanāt, sato vṛtteḥ sādhu-saṅge ṣaḍbhir bhaktiḥ prasidhyati.* If you want actually to make progress in our devotional life, the *utsāhāt,* enthusiasm, is the first thing. If you are lacking enthusiasm, then you should rest, instead of making too much agitation within the mind. The... If you cannot find out... Some, something has dropped in the water, in the river, you cannot see the things dropped within the water by agitating the water. Just stand still for sometimes. As soon as the water is settled up, you'll see the things as they are.
> That answer was given by Caitanya Mahāprabhu that... Vāsudeva Datta proposed, "My dear Lord, You have come. You take all the sinful persons from this world. Let them be delivered, as You have personally come. So if You think they're so sinful they cannot be taken back to home, back to Godhead, then I take all their sins. You take them only." That was his offer. Vaiṣṇava. Vaiṣṇava thinks like that, that he may remain in the hell, but by Kṛṣṇa consciousness everyone may be delivered. That is real Vaiṣṇava. *Para-duḥkha-duḥkhī.* Vaiṣṇava is unhappy by seeing others unhappy. *Para-duḥkha-duḥkhī.* So Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied that "Suppose I take all the living entities of this universe, and still there are so many other universes. This universe is just like one mustard seed in the bag of mustard seeds."

**[1975: Bhagavad-gītā 16.7](spoken/1975/750127bg.tok)**
> But what is the basic principle? Why I shall accept something and reject something? The basic principle is to go forward in our spiritual understanding. That is the basic principle. We are suffering in this material world. We may say that "We have no suffering. It is very pleasing," but actually, in every step we are suffering. Just like this is winter season. To take bath in the winter season is suffering. And in the summer season, to take bath in the summer season, it is very pleasing. So either we are suffering or we are enjoying according to different season and circumstances, but actually we are suffering. Because... Take this winter season. We do not want chilly cold; therefore we are covering. The cause is we are suffering; therefore we are covering. And after covering, we are feeling some pleasure. This pleasure is, for the time being, absence of suffering, that's all. Actually, we are suffering, but by some arrangement, when we stop that suffering for the time being and feel enjoying, that is material enjoyment. Actually there is no enjoyment, because in the winter season by covering the body we are feeling pleased, but in the summer season by covering the body we feel not pleased. So this is going on. So rejecting and... Why the same dress, warm dress, does not give us pleasure in the summer season? And the same dress, in the winter season it gives us pleasure? So we do not know whether dress is pleasing or suffering. Means sometimes it is pleasing and sometime it is displeasing. Similarly water: we do not know whether water is pleasing or displeasing. Sometimes it is pleasing; sometimes it is not pleasing. Everything. *Mātrā-sparśās tu kaunteya śītoṣṇa-sukha-duḥkha-dāḥ*.
> So in this material world, actually we are suffering either in summer season or winter season, or any other season—with dress or without dress, with water, not water—the cause is going on, suffering only. But we are trying to cover this cause of suffering, and by temporary stopping the cause of suffering we are thinking that we are enjoying. But actually there is no enjoying in this material world, because you will find in the *Bhagavad-gītā* this material world has been described as *duḥkhālayam aśāśvatam*.

**[1975: Room Conversation](spoken/1975/750127r1.tok)**
> Actually, it so happened in California. One big chemist, he came there to lecture the chemical evolution, by mixing of chemical life has come into existence. So there was one student, he is my disciple, Dr. Svarūpa Dāmodara, he said that [break]...first-class cheater, that's all. *Mūḍhā. Mūḍhā na māṁ duṣkṛtino mūḍhāḥ prapadyante narādhamāḥ*. There is no substance [indistinct], and people are suffering for want of this knowledge. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, that we are trying to bring people in true platform of knowledge, not to increase death like these rascals and fools. That is our proposal. They are trying to obstruct us, because if everyone becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious then they can't cheat anyone.
> So these are foolish theories, that there is no God, things are taking place automatically and things are coming out. These are all foolish theories. There is no evidence. *Pramāṇa:* there must be evidence. Otherwise... Just like science means simply not to see observation that things are taking place, but experiment. It must be substantiated by experiment. Just like theoretically everyone knows that two chemicals, soda and alkali, mixes together and it is, there is interaction, effervescence. But who is mixing the soda and alkali, er, alkali and acid? There must be. Therefore the answer is there in the *Bhagavad-gītā, mayādhyakṣeṇa prakṛtiḥ suyate sa-carācaram* :

**[1977: Room Conversation](spoken/1977/770127r1.pur)**
> Yes. Your scientific knowledge, your car, means you are more dependent. Now, suppose you have to stay here.
---
**[1977: Room Conversation with Two Indian Guests](spoken/1977/770127r2.pur)**
> Tapo divyaṁ putrakā yena śuddhyed sattvaṁ* [Transl. They won't do any *tapasya*. Simply accept a *guru* and get the rubberstamp "I am a disciple." That's all. And if the guru can show some magic etc then he is a big *guru*.]
>that is not the India has no *kṣatriya* spirit. Very good *kṣatriya* spirit. But it was not organized. That is the difference of opinion between Gandhi and Subhas. He wanted to organize it.
