# January 13 ## Spoken on January 13 *Lectures from this day: 7 recordings* --- **[1969: Bhagavad-gītā 4.26–30](spoken/1969/690113bg.la)** > So the restriction of sex life is from the beginning. *Brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha* and *sannyāsa.* Only *gṛhastha,* the householders, are allowed restricted sex life. The whole idea is that this material existence is due to sex life. That's all. If you increase your sex life, then increase your duration of material existence. If you decrease your sex life, then you advance towards the path of absolute realization, *yad icchanto brahmacaryaṁ caranti*. In the *Bhagavad-gītā* you will find that one who is desiring to go back to Godhead, back to home, then he should practice life of celibacy. That is very important thing. > Actually *gṛhiṇī*, *gṛhiṇī,* "the mistress of the home." Without wife there is no meaning of home, according to Vedic culture. Home means wife, *gṛhiṇī gṛham ucyate*. *Na gṛhaṁ gṛham ity ucate* [*Cc Ādi* 15.27]. Home... If we mean home means an apartment*—*so we are also living in an apartment: four walls, one ceiling, one floor. But why you are called *gṛhastha*? The only difference is that *gṛhastha* is with wife and *sannyāsī* is without wife. Without wife means voluntarily giving up the connection with wife. --- **[1969: Lecture [Partially Recorded](spoken/1969/690113le.la)** > *Bhūtvā bhūtvā pralīyate*. Here, everything in the material world, everything is born, it remains for some time, it grows, then dwindles, then vanishes. So this is not very desirable. But unfortunately, the modern civilization, they do not know. They are very much proud of advancement of knowledge, but they do not know that the cause of suffering is this body. They do not know. And they do not know how to make a solution of this material existence. Therefore *parābhava. Bhāgavata* says all their so-called, nonsense advancement of civilization is defeat. Defeat. > So in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* also it is stated that *parābhavas tāvad abodha-jātaḥ* We are all born ignorant. Either in human society or in animal society, we are born all ignorant. Therefore, in the human society the system is that children are given education. Why? Because it is supposed that the child is born ignorant. Similarly, as we give material education to the children, it is the duty of the parents to enlighten them with spiritual education. --- **[1973: Bhagavad-gītā 7.1](spoken/1973/730113bg.bom)** > This is our relationship. We are eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa is asking here: *mayy āsakta.* We are eternally related with Kṛṣṇa, but now, under the influence of this material energy, or illusory, external energy, we have forgotten Kṛṣṇa. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says that "You have to divert your attention, attachment, to Me." *Mayy āsakta. Mayi.* Kṛṣṇa says *mayi. Mayy āsakta. Mayy āsakta-manāḥ.* Mind has to be always fixed up in Kṛṣṇa. This *yoga* has to be practiced, as Mahārāja Ambarīṣa did: *sa vai manaḥ kṛṣṇa-padāravindayoḥ*. > So this *Bhagavad-gītā* is real religion, because it is directly spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead for the benefit of the whole human society. And Kṛṣṇa says also that "If you have got any other faith, religion, you give it up." *Sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekam* : only one. --- **[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.16.18](spoken/1974/740113sb.la)** > So this ignorance... Therefore ignorance is bliss here. No knowledge. This is not knowledge—this is knowledge, *Bhagavad-gītā: yānti deva-vratā devān.* If you become godly, good character, that good character is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. A Kṛṣṇa conscious man does not even like to go to the moon planet, sun planet. Their idea is further. What is that?GolokaVṛndāvana. That is confirmed. Is it possible to go to Goloka Vṛndāvana, Kṛṣṇa's planet? Yes. Kṛṣṇa says, *mad-yājino yānti mām*: > So there is no improvement. There is no spiritual improvement*. Tān ahaṁ dviṣataḥ krūrān kṣipāmy ajasram eva yoniṣu*. Without religion, everyone will degrade. Degrade means, now in this life as human being you may have some facilities, but just after death, *adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ. Jaghanya-guṇa-vṛtti-sthā adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ*. Without religious principles everyone will be abominable, and therefore *adho gacchanti tāmasāḥ,* they are in ignorance. So ignorance is bliss now: "It is folly to be wise where ignorance is bliss." You see? If we talk nonsense, then many people will accept. But if we are preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness, God consciousness, they do not take very much care: "This is primitive. Only the old fools, they will take part in this." --- **[1976: Morning Walk](spoken/1976/760113mw.cal)** > The Nabadwip Commissioner came, and he was so impressed. Now he is thinking... He is trying to... He is a little bit greedy that so many things are going in Māyāpur. He is trying to think how he can include Māyāpur within Nabadwip municipality. --- **[1976: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.5.2 in Bengali](spoken/1976/760113sb.cal)** > [Transl. What will you gain by taking so much hardship? Will your life become purified by hard labor? No. You have to undergo *tapasya.* Everyone in this world strives hard but does that mean they all become rich? No. You will get what you deserve. This is the law of nature. *Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni* It is not true that by working harder one will get more. Only intelligent people are capable to understand this. Therefore we should work hard only to be connected to the the Supreme Personality of Godhead again. We have forgotten the Supreme Lord and as a result we have to suffer the miseries of.. > [Transl. The activities we perform to revive this devotional attitude is called *Tapasya*. Therefore Ṛṣabhadeva said, *tapo divyaṁ putrakā yena sattvaṁ* If you want to purify your existence, suppose you have contacted malaria disease and fever and if you want to get freed from that fever, actually freedom means like that. Artificially we invite some fever but somehow or other we should get rid of the fever by some medication etc. So by medication when there is no longer any fever and the doctor says you are freed from fever. Similarly now our fever is that we will enjoy this world or renounce this world. There are two classes of men. One class of men are busy in sense gratification, how to enjoy this world? They are called *karmī*. And another class of men, when they beome tired of enjoying this world and conclude that there is nothing substantial in it, they become *jñānī* and declare, *brahma satyaṁ jagan mithyā.* --- **[1977: Conversation and Instruction On New Movie](spoken/1977/770113r1.all)** > In 1936..., or '35 in Bombay, after installation of Deity, so I was *gṛhastha—*I helped them to collect some money. All my Godbrothers applauded and recommended to Guru Mahārāja that "Abhay Babu is so influential. Why he lives outside the temple? He can become the temple commander and manage this Bombay temple. Why he is living outside?" Mean "Guru Mahārāja may ask him." So I was... From this Allahabad I was going to Bombay. I had one small office there. So after hearing, he said, "It is better that he is living little away from your *maṭha.* And when time will rise, he'll do everything. He hasn't got to be advised." I could not accept [laughs] why he said like that. That means he was so kind that he expected that I shall do something. That was my asset*—*his blessing. And I was thinking that "His, this mission must be done very nicely." Although I was not capable to do anything, I was thinking like that. So desire was there, and maybe blessing was there. Yes. There was no question of qualification. > [pause] I used to think like that. In all our temples the *prasādam* distribution should be so random, that within ten miles nobody should remain hungry. There are many persons in India, they are half time hungry. And if you distribute *prasādam*, "Come on here. You are hungry, take *prasādam*. If I cannot supply you daily, I'll supply at least two days, three days weekly." And they're coming. You have seen Māyāpur picture, that big *prasāda* distribution hall. Regular two thousand people are coming, Sunday, Saturday. And Hindu, Muslim, they're sitting down. No grudges. --- ## Letters on January 13 *Letters from this day: 17* --- **[1968: Letter to Andrea Temple](letters/1968/680113_andrea_temple)** > I have heard from Govinda dasi that you are such a nice girl, and I appreciate your sincere interest in this Krishna Conscious philosophy and this Sankirtana movement of Lord Caitanya. --- **[1968: Letter to Jadurani](letters/1968/680113_jadurani)** > So long we have got materialistic view the serpent is fierce.
