# January 13 *Lectures from this day: 7 recordings* --- **[[spoken/690113le.la|Lecture [partially recorded] — January 13, 1969, Los Angeles]]** **Prabhupāda:** We are all in ignorance, in the darkness of ignorance. *Ajñāna-timirāndhasya.* So the disciple is praying that "I am... I was in the darkness of ignorance," but *jñānāñjana-śalākayā,* "but you have opened my eyes by the torture of knowledge..." Not... What is called? "Torch," "torch of knowledge." *Ajñāna-timirāndhasya jñānāñjana-śalākayā, cakṣur-unmīlitaṁ yena* [*Gautamīya-tantra*]: "One who has opened my eyes in that way," *tasmai śrī gurave namaḥ,* "I offer my respectful obeisances unto my spiritual master." So in the *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam* also it is stated that *parābhavas tāvad abodha-jātaḥ* [[sb/5/5/5|[SB. 5.5.5] ]] We are all born ignorant. Either in human society or in animal society, we are born all ignorant. Therefore, in the human society the system is that children are given education. Why? Because it is supposed that the child is born ignorant. Similarly, as we give material education to the children, it is the duty of the parents to enlighten them with spiritual education. --- **[[spoken/730113bg.bom|Bg 7.1 — January 13, 1973, Bombay]]** **Prabhupāda:** > mayy āsakta-manāḥ pārtha > yogaṁ yuñjan mad-āśrayaḥ > asaṁśayaṁ samagraṁ māṁ > yathā jñāsyasi tac chṛṇu > [[bg/7/1|[Bg. 7.1] ]] Bhagavān. There is definition of Bhagavān. Not that any rascal advertises himself Bhagavān and he becomes Bhagavān. No. Parāśara Muni, father of Vyāsadeva, gave us what we mean by Bhagavān. *Bhaga* means opulence, and *vān* means one who possesses opulence. Just like we have our practical experience: Anyone who is very rich, he's attractive. He becomes attractive. Many men go to him for some favor. One who is very influential, he becomes very attractive. One who is very famous, he becomes attractive. One who is very learned, wise, he becomes attractive. One who is very wise, he becomes attractive. And one who is in the renounced order of life... Renounced order of life means one who possesses everything but renounces, does not use it for his personal benefit. Just like a person who is very charitably disposed, he gives everything to the public, he's also very attractive. --- **[[spoken/740113sb.la|SB 1.16.18 — January 13, 1974, Los Angeles]]** **Prabhupāda:** [leads chanting of *Jaya Rādhā-Mādhava*] [leads *prema-dhvani* prayers] Thank you very much. **Pradyumna:** Translation "The personality of religious principles, Dharma, was wandering about in the form of a bull. And he met the personality of Earth in the form of a cow, who appeared to grieve like a mother who had lost her child. She had tears in her eyes, and the beauty of her body was lost. Thus Dharma questioned the Earth as follows." **Prabhupāda:** *Dharmaḥ padaikena caran* [[sb/1/16/18|[SB. 1.16.18] ]]. *Padā ekena, padaikena*. So in this Kali-yuga, religious principles of human society is supposed to be only one fourth, and there are four *yugas:* Satya, Tretā, Dvāpara, Kali. In the Satya-yuga people were very religious, *paramahaṁsa*. All of them were *paramahaṁsa,* so enlightened, elevated in religious principles, and they used to live for 100,000s of years. As the religious principles are reducing, so many other things are reducing, of which the duration of life, bodily strength, mercifulness, memory... In this way we are becoming almost on the level of animals. One-fourth religious principles means practically nobody is following. But still there is a section, they follow. Just like Vaiṣṇavas, Kṛṣṇa conscious people—they are all over the world, at least at the present moment, and India there are many millions, and other countries it is now spreading. --- **[[spoken/760113mw.cal|Morning Walk — January 13, 1976, Calcutta]]** **Tamāla Kṛṣṇa:** Little bit. It's a good... A good place to do it is that Victoria Memorial, because there's so many... **Jayapatākā:** Something like that: "...are sweeping the street." But only a few thousand of that are actually doing it. There's a big scandal. **Prabhupāda:** Dishonest. They are producing only dishonest men. [break] ...get a boat like this? No. --- **[[spoken/760113sb.cal|SB 5.5.2 [Bengali] — January 13, 1976, Calcutta]]** **Prabhupāda:** > mahat-sevāṁ dvāram āhur vimuktes > tamo-dvāraṁ yoṣitāṁ saṅgi-saṅgam > mahāntas te sama-cittāḥ praśāntā > vimanyavaḥ suhṛdaḥ sādhavo ye > [[sb/5/5/2|[SB. 5.5.2] ]] [Transl. Yesterday we were discussing about the instructions of emperor Ṛṣabhadeva. Ṛṣabhadeva imparted instructions to His sons. Ṛṣabhadeva said that this human form of life is not meant for working hard whole day like dogs and lambs just to eat two pieces of *chapatis*. This is not human life. But nowadays people are taught to work very hard. "Now is the time for hard labor." I have seen it in so many signboards here in India.* [Transl. The instruction that simply work very hard, according to *śāstra*, is also done by hogs. Is it the duty of the human form of life to work hard like hogs? No. Actually we don't want to work hard. In Marshall Economics we read in our childhood that nobody wants to work hard but due to his family affection he works hard. In fact we see that when some people accumulate some money by working hard then they no longer work hard. They want to relax somewhere peacefully. So working hard, especially for the human beings, just to fill up the belly is not desirable. For what purpose should we labor hard? Ah? Therefore tapasya is recommended. *Tapasya* is also hard work. Why *tapasya* is required? *Tapo divyaṁ*. [[sb/5/5/1|[SB. 5.5.1] ]] [Transl. To attain Bhagavān: the Supreme Personality of Godhead. You undergo austerity for that purpose. This is Vedic civilization. From childhood they are taught to perform austerity. *Brahmacārī*. Practice *tapasya*. This is life. After practicing *tapasya* learn how to become a good *gṛhastha*. Then after becoming a *gṛhastha* also for some time, you give up your family life *gṛhastha* life and accept *vānaprastha*. Thereafter finally accept *sannyāsa*. This *brahmacārī*, *gṛhastha*, *vānaprastha* and *sannyāsa,* this is the process. And *brāhmaṇa*, *kṣatriya*, *vaiśya* and *śūdra*. From this point begins human life. --- **[[../../spoken/1977/770113le.all.md|Lecture at Kumbha-melā — January 13, 1977, Allahabad]]** *[Lecture file not found]* --- **[[spoken/770113r1.all|Conversation and Instruction On New Movie — January 13, 1977, Allahabad]]** **Prabhupāda:** These are weapons. That was the only endeavor, how legally he could occupy the bricks and stones of *Gauḍīya Math.* That's all. He had no other ambition. How to push on Caitanya Mahāprabhu's mission, how to push on Guru Mahārāja's... He had no such. It was simply show. But real purpose was how to occupy, how to take the whole property. Business. **Prabhupāda:** Yes. They also, when they saw that "This man is legally taking everything. *Gauḍīya sannyāsīs,* we cannot go home. We must have some shelter." No spirit of pushing on. **Prabhupāda:** No, my... Of course, I did not attempt in the beginning. I started my activities when I was seventy years old. So they thought, "This man is *gṛhastha.* He is embarassed with family life. What he'll do?" [laughs] That was their impression. But I never neglected. Guru Mahārāja told me. I was simply thinking, "How to do it? How to do it?" I thought, "Let me become a rich businessman. The money will be required." That was my thought. But Guru Mahārāja was asking me, "You give up. I'll give you money." That I could not understand. I was planning. My plan was not wrong, but I was thinking, "The money required, so let me earn some money. Then I shall begin." And Guru Mahārāja said, "You give up this money-earning endeavor. You come completely. I'll give you money." I can understand now. But my desire was there. Therefore he guided me.
