*Lectures from this day: 10 recordings*

**[1967: Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 22.14–19](spoken/1967/670110cc.ny)**
> This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. You simply change the consciousness. Now your consciousness is absorbed in varieties of sense gratification. You stop this. You just apply your senses unto the service of the Supreme Lord. This is called devotional service, *bhakti,* or Kṛṣṇa consciousness. It is simple process. Just we have to change. The activities are the same. *Bhakti* means *sarvopādhi-vinirmuktaṁ tat-paratvena nirmalam*.
> So here Lord Caitanya says that *kṛṣṇa-bhakti haya abhidheya-pradhāna*. For self-realization—if you want to realize yourself or if you want to get out of these material clutches—then the main function is to become in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and be engaged in the service of the Lord directly. And *bhakti-mukha-nirīkṣaka karma-yoga-jñāna.* And other processes, they're also admitted, but they are dependent on this process.
---
**[1968: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.5.2](spoken/1968/680110sb.la)**
> We should try to understand how we are constituted. The *Bhagavad-gītā* explains our constitutional position very nicely: *indriyāṇi parāṇy āhuḥ*. Indriyāṇi. Indriyāṇi* means senses. Just like what is my material existence? I am in this world. What for? For my sense gratification. That's all. This is the first constitutional position. Every animal, every living entity, is busy for eating, sleeping and defending and mating. That means the bodily necessities, senses. First of all, the prominent factor of our existence is the senses. Therefore *Bhagavad-gītā* says, *indriyāṇi parāṇy āhuḥ.* My material existence means the sense enjoyment. That's all.
> Therefore, as there is the important part of this body, the head, similarly, those who are giving intelligence to the society, they are called *brāhmaṇas.* That's all. *Brāhmaṇa* is not a thing which is born by, I mean to say, familywise. No. That is not... In the *Bhagavad-gītā* you'll find, *cātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛṣṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśaḥ*. There is no question of birthright. Anyone. Anyone. Just like in our ordinary life, anyone can become your president. It is not that a particular family has to become. One who is intelligent enough, if people like, he will be voted, he'll be elected. Similarly, according to the quality and work, the section of the society is imagined. Not imagined; practically designated.
---
**[1969: Initiations & Weddings](spoken/1969/690110in.la)**
> Whether you are making progress in Kṛṣṇa consciousness you have to test yourself, whether you are decreasing your material desires. That's all. Because in the perfect stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness there is no more material desires. *Svāmin kṛtārtho 'smi varaṁ na yāce :* "I have no more any demand. I am fully satisfied." *Kṛṣṇa-bhakta niṣkāma ataeva śānta*. If you want *śānti,* peacefulness, then you have to become completely Kṛṣṇa conscious—*kṛṣṇa-bhakta niṣkāma*—because he has no more demand.
> Because he has no demand. "Therefore he is peaceful." All others, they have got some demand. So this is the process. By making progress in Kṛṣṇa consciousness means your demands will be nil. That's all. When you find in that position, that "I have no more any demand," *svāmin kṛtārtho 'smi .* "I am fully satisfied, Kṛṣṇa," then that is your perfection. So try to achieve that position. Now you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa.
---
**[1969: Bhajan & Purport Gaura Pahū](spoken/1969/690110pu.la)**
> In the *Bhāgavata* also it is stated that they do not know that by this sense gratificatory process they will have another body. And the body is the cause of material pangs. Because I have got this body, therefore I feel headache, I feel stomachache, I feel this and that. But as soon as we are out of this material body, there is no more material pangs; it is simply joyful life. *Brahma-bhūtaḥ prasannātmā*.
> Gaura pahū nā bhajiyā goinu, prema-rathana-dhana helāya hārāiṅu.* This is another song by Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura. He's saying that "I have invited my spiritual death by not worshiping Lord Caitanya." *Gaura pahū nā bhajiyā goinu. Gaura pahū* means Lord Caitanya, and *nā bhajiyā,* "without worshiping." *Goinu,* "I have invited spiritual death." And *adhame yatane kari dhanu tainu:* "Why I have invited the spiritual death? Because I am engaged in something which is useless, and I have rejected the real purpose of my life." *Adhama* means valueless things, and *dhana* means valuables.
---
**[1971: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 6.2.5–8](spoken/1971/710110sb.cal)**
> So the Yamadūta is comparing the trustworthy government. Everything is discussed in *Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam,* but people do not take advantage of all these instruction. They mean... *Bhāgavatam* means that *rāsa-līlā,* that's all. So many nice instructions are there in different cantos. Actually, the Kṛṣṇa is described in the Tenth Canto, and other nine cantos are specially meant for purifying the heart and understanding real Kṛṣṇa, *tattvataḥ,* as it is described in the *Bhagavad-gītā*.*
> So one may be not bewildered. They may criticize that it's too much, but it is not too much; it is actual fact. Actual fact. That is *aparādha.* One who thinks like that, that *hari-nāma* has not so much power that it can counteract, they are offender. For them it is not possible. But one who believes in the words of the *śāstras,* as it is stated here, for him it is actually effective. *Artha-vāda.* Out of ten offenses, *artha-vāda,* one who comments like that, that is *artha-vāda,* and that is offense.
---
**[1973: The Nectar of Devotion](spoken/1973/730110nd.bom)**
> That is the difference between spiritual bliss and material enjoyment. Material enjoyment is limited. You cannot enjoy unlimitedly. That is not possible. Just for few seconds, for few minutes or for few hours, then it becomes disgusting. That is the material enjoyment. But the spiritual enjoyment, spiritual bliss is different. That is simply increasing. So therefore in the *śāstra* it is said, *ramante yoginaḥ anante*. Those who are *yogīs,*bhakta-*yogī*, they enjoy unlimitedly. *Rāmante yoginaḥ anante.* And that is *satyānande.* That *ānanda* bliss is real bliss. This is artificial. This is perverted reflection.
> Vigraha* means form, but not this form. Those who have no knowledge about Kṛṣṇa, they are thinking Kṛṣṇa is *māyā:* these *bhaktas,* they are worshiping the *māyā* form. Their philosophy is when Kṛṣṇa comes, when God comes, He takes a material form. No. That's not right. Kṛṣṇa says, *sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā*. Sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā.* The *ātma-māyayā* means *cit* potency. These Māyāvādī philosophers, they have no information that *cit* potency. That is *ahlādinī śakti;* that is Rādhārāṇī. They have got experience of this material potency, external energy, Durgā. But they have no information of the *cit* potency.
---
**[1974: Morning Walk](spoken/1974/740110mw.la)**
>how long one suffers. He can stop his suffering immediately, but if he does not take the medicine, then what can be done? Kṛṣṇa says, *ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo mokṣayiṣyāmi*. If Kṛṣṇa withdraws all his sinful activities, then where is the question of suffering? But he will not do. Now, because he is not surrendered soul to Kṛṣṇa, so he is suffering from time immemorial, and nobody can say how long he will suffer. He will go on suffering. It cannot stop. Therefore Kṛṣṇa says *mūḍha,* rascal. *Na māṁ prapadyante mūḍhāḥ*.
> The body's machinery is also well equipped, as I can work. This is nature's gift. Not that "This brain is first class, that brain is first class, er, last class." All brain, last class. It is matter. The man who is working, the soul who is working, he is first class, second class, third class. It is said clearly, *īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe 'rjuna tiṣṭhati* : "Īśvara,* Kṛṣṇa, is situated in everyone's heart." *Bhrāmayan sarva-bhūtāni yantrārūḍhāni māyayā* : "He is offered a *yantra,* a machine, made by material energy." But that is under the direction of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa's asked the material energy, "Give a good machine; he can work. Good or bad, as He wants, as He wants. That's all. Give him a...," *yantrārūḍhāni māyayā.* It is all bad. Either this electric machine or that manual machine, they are all matter. So anything material, that is bad. But he wants it; "All right, give it." That is going on. He wants this facility. And before this motorcars, people were walking on foot. All business was being done. But we wanted a machine like that, so Kṛṣṇa has given us brain to manufacture. That's all. But what you will benefit by this? Therefore Kṛṣṇa says, "All right, you give up all this nonsense proposal." But they will not do that. They will create another nonsense desire. That desire should be stopped. That is desireless. Because they will go on simply proposing some nonsense desire. That is their material existence. Now, they have discovered this, made this motor, nice... Now there is problem, no power...
---
**[1974: Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.16.13–15](spoken/1974/740110sb.la)**
> So these *karmīs* are like that. Some of them understand. They at least believe in future life. But they do not know how to stop this transmigration of the soul. That they do not know, *karmīs.* They know, "It is unavoidable to change the bodies. So there is no need of endeavoring..." Therefore they do not know, they cannot know, neither they can do. They simply, "Yes, there is life, but let me become in more comfortable situation." Just like in this life they are trying just to become in comfortable situation of this body, similarly, when they understand that, accepting at least that there is next life, they want to go to the heavenly planet, *svarga.* But they do not know that that is also not ultimate happiness. That is stated in the *Bhagavad-gītā.* You read nicely. *Ābrahma-bhuvanāl lokāḥ punar āvartino 'rjuna*.
> So the *jñānīs,* who actually... No, I mean to say, *jñānīs,* they also immediately come. Therefore they have to try to come to this position of understanding Kṛṣṇa, many, many, births, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante*, not in one birth. They will have to take birth. Their so-called liberation is not possible, because if you have to take birth, then where is your liberation? There is no liberation. Liberation means no more accepting birth in this material world. That is called liberation. So *Bhagavad-gītā* says, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān.* Those who are cultivating knowledge, so there is no *mukti,* because they have to take birth again. So in this way, *bahūnāṁ janmanām ante jñānavān māṁ prapadyate,* when he actually comes to the knowledge point, he surrenders to Kṛṣṇa. Then *vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ*.
