Krsna Appears in the Prison to Vasudeva and Devaki

![[0022_SB-1_1_7.jpg]]
*Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa appeared as the son of Vasudeva and Devakī.*

The Spiritual Worlds

![[0023_SB-1-1-front.jpg]]
*The original spiritual planet, which resembles the whorl of a huge lotus flower, is called Goloka Vṛndāvana. It is the abode of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the original Personality of Godhead. This original planet of Goloka throws off a spiritual effulgence called the brahmajyoti, within which are unlimited numbers of spiritual planets, or Vaikuṇṭhalokas. The conception
of spiritual bliss (brahmānanda) is fully present in those planets. Each of them is eternal, indestructible, and free from all kinds of inebrieties experienced in the material world. Each of them is self-illuminating and more powerfully dazzling than (if we can imagine) the total sunshine of millions of mundane suns. The inhabitants of those planets have full knowledge of everything; they are all godly and free from all sorts of material hankerings. They have nothing to do there except to render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Nārāyaṇa, who is the predominating Deity in every Vaikuṇṭha planet. The Lord and His eternal servitors in the transcendental kingdom all have eternal forms, which are auspicious, infallible, spiritual, and eternally youthful. In other words, they do not experience birth, death, old age, or disease. Thus that eternal land is full of transcendental enjoyment, beauty, and bliss.*

The Spiritual World

![[0028_SB-1-3-f.c.jpg]]
*The Lord's abode and the Vaikuṇṭha planets in the spiritual sky are far beyond these mundane universes.*

The Lord's Incarnations

![[0030_SB-1_1-14.jpg]]
*The incarnations of Godhead are innumerable, like the waves in the ocean.*

Brahma, Visnu, and Siva

![[0030_SB-1_1_9.jpg]]

of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara.*

Paramatma in All Beings

![[0031_SB-1_1_11.jpg]]
*Lord Paramātmā pervades all things, just as fire permeates wood.*

The Supersoul

![[0032_SB-2_1_3.jpg]]
*A plenary portion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead known as
the Supersoul resides within the body in the region of the heart. He measures about eight inches and has four hands, carrying a lotus, a wheel of a chariot, a conchshell, and a club respectively. His mouth expresses His happiness, His eyes are spread like lotus petals and His garments,
bedecked with valuable jewels, are yellowish like the saffron of a kadamba flower. His ornaments are all made of gold, set with jewels, and He wears a glowing headdress and earrings. On His chest He wears the Kaustubha jewel engraved with a beautiful calf, on His shoulders He wears other jewels, and around His neck He wears a garland of fresh flowers. About His waist He wears an ornamental wreath; on His fingers, rings studded with valuable jewels. His leglets, His bangles, His oiled hair
curling with bluish tint and His beautiful smiling face are all very pleasing.
The Lord's magnanimous pastimes and the glowing glancing of His smiling face all indicate His extensive benedictions.*

Creation

![[0032_SB-2_1_7.jpg]]
*In a corner of the spiritual sky (brahmajyoti) a spiritual cloud sometimes
appears, and the covered portion is called the mahat-tattva. Then, by His plenary portion known as Mahā-viṣṇu, the Lord lies down within the water of the mahat-tattva. This water is called the Causal Ocean.
While Mahā-viṣṇu sleeps within the Causal Ocean, innumerable universes are generated along with His breathing. These floating universes scatter all over the Causal Ocean, remaining manifest only during the breathing period of Mahā-viṣṇu. In each and every universal globe the same Mahā-viṣṇu enters as Garbhodakaśāiyī Viṣṇu and lies down on the serpentlike Śeṣa incarnation, and from His navel a lotus sprouts. Upon the lotus is born Brahmā, the lord of the universe, who creates the sun, the moon, the demigods and all forms of living beings of different shapes in terms of their different desires.*

Churning of the Milk Ocean

![[0032_SB-2_2_3.jpg]]
*To help the demigods, the primeval Lord assumed the incarnation of a gigantic tortoise, swimming in the ocean
of milk.*

Krsna Saves Pariksit in the Womb

![[0045_SB-1-2-1.jpg]]
*Just to protect the progeny of the Kuru dynasty, Śrī Kṛṣṇa covered the
embryo of Uttarā by His personal energy.*

Supersoul Present in All Hearts

![[0046_SB-7-3-4.jpg]]
*Queen Kuntī knew that in reality Kṛṣṇa was neither her nephew nor an ordinary family member of her paternal house. She knew perfectly well that He was the primeval Lord, who lives in everyone's heart as the Supersoul. Thus she addressed Him as "the supreme controller, without beginning or end, the all-pervasive one." Here we see how Lord Kṛṣṇa's all-pervasive Supersoul feature is expanded in the hearts of all creatures. In accordance with each living entity's state of consciousness, Lord Kṛṣṇa creates many kinds of bodies – bodies of human beings, animals, birds, plants, insects, and so on. And in the heart of all these innumerable bodily forms, the Lord resides with the living being as the Supersoul. The Supersoul in every body gives intelligence to the individual soul according to his capacity for understanding, and He manifest Himself to the individual soul according to his degree of austerity, penance, and spiritual realization. According to good or bad karma, the Supersoul directs the wandering of all living entities, who are seated within the bodily machine made of the material energy. One who sees the Supersoul accompanying the individual soul in all bodies, and who understands that neither the soul nor the Supersoul is ever destroyed, actually sees, and he therefore gradually advances toward spiritual perfection.*

Gajendra Appeals to Lord Visnu

![[0046_SB-8-1-1.jpg]]
*The elephant Gajendra prayerfully lifted a lotus aloft as an offering to Lord Viṣṇu, who came to deliver him from the crocodile, and also from material life.*

The Birth of Lord Krsna

![[0047_SB-10-1-4.jpg]]
*One reason why Lord Kṛṣṇa's activities appeared bewildering to Queen Kuntī was that He came to this world to fulfill many purposes simultaneously. One important purport was simply to satisfy the desires of His dear devotees Vasudeva and Devakī. In their former lives, Vasudeva and Devakī were known as Sutapā and Pṛśni. They were ordered by Lord Brahmā to produce offspring, and so they engaged themselves in severe austerities for thousands of years. Being pleased by their penances, Kṛṣṇa came before them and asked them what they wanted. They said, "We want a son like You. That is our desire." Kṛṣṇa agreed, and in their next lives Sutapā and Pṛśni (now Vasudeva and Devakī) had the extraordinary opportunity to play the role of Lord Kṛṣṇa's parents. As shown here, Vasudeva and Devakī in the dense darkness of night, like the full moon rising the eastern horizon. The newborn child had very wonderful lotuslike eyes and bore in His four hands a conch shell, disc, club, and lotus. On His chest was the mark of Śrīvatsa, and on His neck the brilliant Kaustubha gem. Then, after receiving prayers from Vasudeva and Devakī and instructing them, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, transformed Himself into His original form as a small human child.*

Kalanemi Attacks Lord Visnu

![[0058_SB-8-2-3.jpg]]
*The demon Kālanemi, seeing the Supreme Lord on the battlefield, took up his trident and prepared to throw it at Garuḍa’s head.*

King Prthu

![[0060_SB-4-2-7.jpg]]
*As a partial representation of the Supreme Lord, King Pṛthu embodied His monarchical power. Thus at King Pṛthu's coronation the various demigods offered him wonderful gifts.*

Lord Narayana and Brahma

![[0062_SB-3-2-b.c.jpg]]
*By his acts of penance, Lord Brahmā was
able to see Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu.*

Universal Devastation

![[0063_SB-3-2-3.jpg]]
*EN SB 12 1988: At the time of cosmic annihilation, a great fire flares up from the mouth of Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa, burning everything throughout the universe and then scorching the lifeless cosmic shell.*

The Secondary Creation: Brahma Casts Off His Impure Body

![[0065_SB-3-3-2.jpg]]
*On the order of the Supreme Lord, Brahmā cast off his impure body.*

Soul Destinations

![[0066_BG--18.jpg]]
*4.11: “As all surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly. Everyone follows My path in all respects.” Kṛṣṇa reciprocates with the living entities according to their desire to serve Him as a servant, friend, parent, or lover. He also reciprocates with those who wish to merge into the Brahman, like the /yogī/ in the illustration. Others want only the fruits of their labor – power, wealth, beauty, or other ephemera of this world, and He also reciprocates with them according to what they desire and what they deserve.*

Meditation on the Supersoul

![[0066_BG--21.jpg]]

Garuda Helps the Sparrow Recover Her Eggs

![[0067_BG--22.jpg]]
*6.24, purport: One should practice yoga with the determination and faith of the sparrow who laid her eggs on the shore of the ocean only to have the powerful ocean carry her eggs away. When the ocean ignored her request to return her eggs, the sparrow decided to dry up the ocean by She scooping out the water in her small beak. Although everyone laughed at her impossible determination, news of her attempt spread, and at last Garuḍa, eagle carrier of Lord Viṣṇu, heard and became compassionate toward his small sister. Garuḍa was pleased by her determination and promised to help. Thus Garuḍa asked the ocean to return the sparrows eggs lest he himself take up the sparrow’s work of emptying the ocean. The ocean was frightened by Garuḍa’s power and returned the eggs.*

Lord Visnu Comes to Karma

![[0071_SB-3-3-3.jpg]]
*The Lord appeared before Kardama Muni with His lotus feet placed on the shoulders of Garuḍa.*

Gajendra Regains His Spiritual Form

![[0074_SB-8-1-2.jpg]]
*When the Lord severed its head from its body, the crocodile assumed a beautiful form as a Gandharva. Even greater was Gajendra's blessing: liberation from birth and death, and a form like the Lord's.*

Kṛṣṇa, the Swift Deliverer

![[0077_BG-33.jpg]]
*12.6–7: Kṛṣṇa flies toward His devotee on the back of His carrier, Garuḍa, in order to lift His devotee out of the material ocean of birth and death. “Those who worship Me, giving up all their activities unto Me and being devoted to Me without deviation, engaged in devotional service and always meditating upon Me, having fixed their minds upon Me, O son of Pṛthā – for them I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death.”*

From Goloka to the Material Creation

![[0077_BG-36.jpg]]
*15.6: The spiritual and material worlds. The lotus represents the original spiritual planet, Goloka Vṛndāvana, the abode of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. The spiritual effulgence surrounding this planet is called the /brahmajyoti/ and is the ultimate goal of impersonalists. Within the unlimited /brahmajyoti/ are innumerable spiritual planets, each a home for a plenary expansion of Lord Kṛṣṇa and inhabited by ever-liberated living beings. Sometimes a spiritual cloud overtakes a corner of the spiritual sky. That covered portion is called the /mahat-tattva,/ or material sky. There, the Lord as Mahā-Viṣṇu lies in the Causal Ocean, the water within the /mahat-tattva./ While He sleeps, innumerable universes emanate from His breathing and float in the Causal Ocean. Mahā-Viṣṇu enters each universe as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and lies in the Garbha Ocean on the serpentine Śeṣa incarnation. From Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu’s navel a lotus stem sprouts, and on the lotus, Brahmā is born. Brahmā creates bodies for all the souls in the material world according to their karma and desires.*

The Five Factors of Action

![[0077_BG-41.jpg]]
*18.14: “The place of action [the body], the performer, the various senses, the many different kinds of endeavor, and ultimately the Supersoul – these are the five factors of action. Whatever right or wrong action a man performs by body, mind, or speech is caused by these five factors.”*

Krsna Reveals Himself to His Devotee

![[0078_BG-28.jpg]]
*9.11: “Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all that be.” Fools mock Kṛṣṇa’s humanlike form but devotees offer their obeisances. Behind Kṛṣṇa are Mahā-Viṣṇu and, in the smaller inset, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, with creator Brahmā sitting on the lotus growing from His navel.*

Krsna's Vibhutis (Opulences)

![[0078_BG-30.jpg]]
*10.41: A sampling of Kṛṣṇa’s infinite manifestations in both the spiritual and material worlds. In the outer circle, clockwise, beginning from the upper left-hand corner: Indra carrying his thunderbolt; the Himalayas; Lord Śiva with the Ganges River in his hair; the moon; the horse Ucchaiḥśravā; the transcendental /om-kāra;/ Kapiladeva; Rāmacandra; flower-bearing spring; Kāmadhuk; Arjuna; Vyāsadeva; Prahlāda; the shark; Vāsuki; Skanda; Varuṇa; Yamarāja; the lion; Kuvera; Agni; and Airāvata. Inner circle, clockwise, beginning from the four-headed Lord Brahmā sitting on the lotus flower: Brahmā; Nārada; Garuḍa; the sun; the ocean; Lord Viṣṇu; Ananta; and the chanting of the holy names – Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. “Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor.”*

Arjuna Sees the Universal Form

![[0078_BG-31.jpg]]
*11.13: “At that time Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although divided into many, many thousands.” Even as Kṛṣṇa displayed His universal form to Arjuna, He did not lose His identity as Arjuna’s friend and remains situated on the chariot with Arjuna.*

Krsna Returns to His Two-Armed Form

![[0078_BG-32.jpg]]
*11.50: “The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.”*

*Lakṣmī, the goddess of fortune, can always be found massaging the legs and thighs of the Lord.*

The Universal Form

![[0082_SB-2-1-9.jpg]]
*The universal form of the Lord is the complete whole of everything that be. This form, adorned with various crowns, clubs, discs, spears, and other weapons, is difficult to look at because of its glaring, fiery effulgence, immeasurable like the sun. Many, many other forms expand without limit from this universal body of the Lord, which spreads throughout the sky and the planets and all space in between. His arms
are the resting place for the great demigods and other leaders, such as
Lord Brahmā, Śiva, Sūrya, and Candra. Indeed, all varieties of living entities,
including the birds, beasts, trees, and everything that be, are all covered by the universal form of the Lord at all times, although He is transcendental to all of them, eternally existing as the Supersoul in a form not exceeding nine inches.*

*With His merciful glance the Lord brought the demons and demigods back to life, and then He lifted Mount Mandara with one hand.*

Siva Saves the Universe by Drinking Poison

![[0084_SB-8-1-5.jpg]]
*When Lord Śiva saw that everyone was extremely disturbed by the poison, he became very compassionate. Thus he took all the poison in his palm and drank it.*

Brahma and the Demigods on the Shore of the Milk Ocean

![[0086_SB-10-1-1.jpg]]
*EN SB 10.1 1977: Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and all the other demigods, having heard of the distress of mother earth, went to the shore of the Ocean of Milk. There they worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who lies on the Ocean of Milk, by reciting the Vedic
mantras known as the Puruṣa-sūkta. While sitting in trance, Lord Brahmā heard the words of Lord Viṣṇu vibrating in the sky. Thus he told the demigods: “O demigods, hear from me the order of the Supreme
Person, and execute it attentively without delay. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who has full potency, will personally appear as the son of Vasudeva. For as long as the Lord moves on earth to diminish its burden by His own potency in the form of time, all of you
demigods should appear through plenary portions as sons and grandsons in the family of the Yadus, and your wives should also appear in that dynasty. The foremost manifestation of Kṛṣṇa is Saṅkarṣaṇa, the origin of all incarnations within this material world. Before Lord Kṛṣṇa appears,
this original Saṅkarṣaṇa will appear as Baladeva, just to please Kṛṣṇa in His transcendental pastimes.”*

Dhanvantari With the Pot of Amrta
