The Birth of Lord Krsna

![[0047_SB-10-1-4.jpg]]
*One reason why Lord Kṛṣṇa's activities appeared bewildering to Queen Kuntī was that He came to this world to fulfill many purposes simultaneously. One important purport was simply to satisfy the desires of His dear devotees Vasudeva and Devakī. In their former lives, Vasudeva and Devakī were known as Sutapā and Pṛśni. They were ordered by Lord Brahmā to produce offspring, and so they engaged themselves in severe austerities for thousands of years. Being pleased by their penances, Kṛṣṇa came before them and asked them what they wanted. They said, "We want a son like You. That is our desire." Kṛṣṇa agreed, and in their next lives Sutapā and Pṛśni (now Vasudeva and Devakī) had the extraordinary opportunity to play the role of Lord Kṛṣṇa's parents. As shown here, Vasudeva and Devakī in the dense darkness of night, like the full moon rising the eastern horizon. The newborn child had very wonderful lotuslike eyes and bore in His four hands a conch shell, disc, club, and lotus. On His chest was the mark of Śrīvatsa, and on His neck the brilliant Kaustubha gem. Then, after receiving prayers from Vasudeva and Devakī and instructing them, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, transformed Himself into His original form as a small human child.*

Trnavarta Attacks Krsna

![[0048_SB-10-2-4.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: Once, Tṛṇāvarta, a demon with mystic powers, appeared in Vṛndāvana in the form of a great whirlwind and carried baby Kṛṣṇa aloft to kill Him.
But to the amazement of all, Kṛṣṇa easily killed the demon and was totally
unharmed.*

Krsna Blesses the Fruit Vendor

![[0049_SB-10-2-13.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018: One day, a fruit vendor came to Nanda Mahārāja’s house. Hearing the vendor call, child Kṛṣṇa took grains in His palms and went to exchange them for fruits.
But His palms were small and He was not careful to hold the grains tightly, so He
dropped many of them. The fruit vendor saw this and was captivated by the child’s beauty, so she accepted whatever grains were left and filled His hands with fruits. In the meantime, her basket of fruit became filled with jewels.*

Makhancora

![[0049_SB-10-2-6.jpg]]
*Kṛṣṇa would sometimes enter the house of a neighbor and steal curd, butter and milk from the pots in the storeroom. Then the cowherd men would find Him and angrily say, “Here is the butter thief! Better capture
Him!” But Kṛṣṇa would simply go on eating the curd and butter, and when He smiled at the cowherd men they would forget everything.*

Krsna Confronts the Baka Demon

![[0050_SB-10-2-14.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018: While the boys and calves were sitting on the bank of the Yamunā, they saw a huge heron as big as a hill. The name of this beast was Bakāsura, and he was a friend of Kaṁsa’s. The bird attacked Kṛṣṇa with his pointed, sharp beak. All the boys fell in despair. But Bakāsura didn’t know that
although Kṛṣṇa was playing the part of a child He was the original father of the universe. Kṛṣṇa caught hold of the two halves of the gigantic heron’s beak and bifurcated his mouth as easily as a child splits a blade of grass.*

The Deliverance of the Yamala-Arjuna Trees

![[0051_SB-10-2-11.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: Bound to the wooden mortar, child Kṛṣṇa proceeded toward the twin arjuna trees, which were actually the sons of Kuvera, in order to fulfill the prophecy of Nārada Muni. Although He was able to pass between them, the large wooden mortar stuck horizontally, and with great strength He pulled the rope tied to the mortar. The two trees, with all their branches and limbs, fell with a crash. Out of the broken, fallen trees came two great personalities, shining like blazing fire,
who bowed before little Kṛṣṇa.*

mood, supremely confident that Kṛṣṇa would protect them.*

Krsna Enjoys Lunch with the Cowherd Boys

![[0052_SB-10-3-1.jpg]]
*After selecting a pleasing location on the riverbank, Lord Kṛṣṇa and His friends opened their baskets of food and began eating in great transcendental pleasure. Like the whorl of a lotus flower surrounded by its petals and leaves, Kṛṣṇa sat in the center, encircled by lines of His friends, who all looked very beautiful. Every one of them was trying to look forward toward Kṛṣṇa, thinking that Kṛṣṇa might look toward him. Among the cowherd boys, some placed their lunch on flowers, some on leaves, fruits, or bunches of leaves, some actually in their baskets, some
on the bark of trees and some on rocks. This is what the children imagined to be their plates as they ate their lunch. All the cowherd boys enjoyed their lunch with Kṛṣṇa, showing one another the different tastes of the different varieties of preparations they had brought from home.
Tasting one another’s preparations, they began to laugh and make one another laugh. In this way they all enjoyed their lunch in the forest.*

Lord Krsna Bewilders Brahma

*Kṛṣṇa volte Seine Allmacht demonstrieren, und so offenbarte er Brahmā, dass all die Kälber und Kuhhirtenjungen Seine Viṣṇu-Erweiterungen waren.*

Brahma Offers Obeisances to Lord Krsna

![[0052_SB-10-3-4.jpg]]
*Brahmā said, “My dear Kṛṣṇa, Your name suggests that You are all-attractive. The attraction of the sun and the moon are due to You. By the attraction of the sun You beautify the existence of the Yadu dynasty. By the attraction of the moon You enhance the potency of the land, demigods, brāhmaṇas, cows, and oceans. Because of Your supreme attraction, demons like Kaṁsa are annihilated. You are the only worshipable Deity within the creation. Accept my humble obeisances until the annihilation of this material world. As long as there is sunshine in this world, kindly accept my humble obeisances.”*

Mother Yasoda Dresses Krsna

![[0053_AB-C49.jpg]]

Yasoda Binds Krsna

![[0080_SB-1-2-3.jpg]]
*With maternal affection, Queen Kuntī here remembers another of Lord Kṛṣṇa's bewildering pastimes. One day, the Lord, playing just like a human child, spoiled the stocked butter of Mother Yaśodā by breaking the pots and distributing the contents to His friends and playmates, including the celebrated monkeys of Vṛndāvana, who took full advantage of the Lord's munificence. Mother Yaśodā saw this, and out of her pure love she wanted to make a show of punishment for her transcendental child. She took a rope and threatened to tie Him up, as is generally done with ordinary children who have been naughty. Seeing the rope in her hands, the Lord bowed down His head and began to weep, and as tears rolled down His cheeks they washed off the black ointment smeared about His beautiful eyes. Because Queen Kuntī felt maternal love for Kṛṣṇa, she adored this image of Him. But because she knew Kṛṣṇa's supreme position, she was amazed that although He was feared by fear personified, He appeared to be afraid of His mother, who wanted to punish Him just like an ordinary child.*

Vasudeva Carries Krsna to Vrndavana

![[0080_SB-10-1-5.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: The Lord told Vasudeva and Devakī, “I know you are afraid of Kaṁsa and want to protect Me. Take Me to Gokula and exchange Me for the daughter just born to Yaśodā.” While carrying child Kṛṣṇa across the storm-tossed river Yamunā, Vasudeva
was sheltered by the hoods of Lord Śeṣa, an expansion of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead. The effulgence from Kṛṣṇa’s body dissipated the darkness so Vasudeva could find his way.*

*EN SB 10.2 1977: In any situation, Kṛṣṇa is always the infinitely powerful Supreme Personality of Godhead. But just to increase the ecstatic emotion of His intimate,
loving devotees like Mother Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja, Kṛṣṇa agrees to come under their control. Sometimes Nanda Mahārāja would ask Kṛṣṇa to bring him his wooden slippers, and Kṛṣṇa, with great difficulty, would put the slippers on His head and take them to His father.
At such times Nanda Mahārāja would exclaim, “My dear Yaśodā, just look at your offspring, Kṛṣṇa! See His blackish bodily luster, His eyes tinged with red color, His broad chest and His beautiful pearl ornaments. How wonderful He looks, and how He is increasing my transcendental
bliss more and more!”*

Caitanya Mahaprabhu Serves at Nandagram

*EN CC Madhya 4: In the cave, Śri Caitanya Mahāprabhu offered His respects to the forms of Nanda and Yaśodā, and then with great ecstatic love He touched the body of Lord Kṛṣṇa.*
