Brahmā had personally received this torchlight of knowledge from the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. In turn, Śrīla Vyāsadeva communicated the message of the Bhāgavatam to his son, Śukadeva Gosvāmī, who spoke it to King Parīkṣit. Śaunaka then questioned Sūta about the history of Mārkaṇḍeya Ṛṣi, a great sage who had survived the previous annihilation of the universe. Sūta Gosvāmī replied, "O great sage Śaunaka, your very question will help remove everyone's illusion, for it leads to topics of Lord Nārāyaṇa, which cleanse away the contamination of this Kali age."*
