Krsna Threatens Devaki

![[0047_SB-10-1-2.jpg]]
*EN KB 2012: While riding with his sister Devakī during the wedding procession, Kaṁsa
heard a voice from the sky proclaim that her eighth child would kill him.
The demon instantly grabbed Devakī's hair and raised his sword to kill
her – but the bride's husband, Vasudeva, dissuaded him.*

The Birth of Lord Krsna

![[0047_SB-10-1-4.jpg]]
*One reason why Lord Kṛṣṇa's activities appeared bewildering to Queen Kuntī was that He came to this world to fulfill many purposes simultaneously. One important purport was simply to satisfy the desires of His dear devotees Vasudeva and Devakī. In their former lives, Vasudeva and Devakī were known as Sutapā and Pṛśni. They were ordered by Lord Brahmā to produce offspring, and so they engaged themselves in severe austerities for thousands of years. Being pleased by their penances, Kṛṣṇa came before them and asked them what they wanted. They said, "We want a son like You. That is our desire." Kṛṣṇa agreed, and in their next lives Sutapā and Pṛśni (now Vasudeva and Devakī) had the extraordinary opportunity to play the role of Lord Kṛṣṇa's parents. As shown here, Vasudeva and Devakī in the dense darkness of night, like the full moon rising the eastern horizon. The newborn child had very wonderful lotuslike eyes and bore in His four hands a conch shell, disc, club, and lotus. On His chest was the mark of Śrīvatsa, and on His neck the brilliant Kaustubha gem. Then, after receiving prayers from Vasudeva and Devakī and instructing them, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, transformed Himself into His original form as a small human child.*

Krsna's Birthday Ceremony

![[0047_SB-10-1-7.jpg]]
*Nanda Mahārāja, Kṛṣṇa's foster father, celebrated the birth ceremony of his
newborn son with great opulence. Everyone was overwhelmed with joy.*

Vasudeva Carries Krsna to Vrndavana

![[0080_SB-10-1-5.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: The Lord told Vasudeva and Devakī, “I know you are afraid of Kaṁsa and want to protect Me. Take Me to Gokula and exchange Me for the daughter just born to Yaśodā.” While carrying child Kṛṣṇa across the storm-tossed river Yamunā, Vasudeva
was sheltered by the hoods of Lord Śeṣa, an expansion of the Supreme Personality
of Godhead. The effulgence from Kṛṣṇa’s body dissipated the darkness so Vasudeva could find his way.*

Brahma and the Demigods on the Shore of the Milk Ocean

![[0086_SB-10-1-1.jpg]]
*EN SB 10.1 1977: Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva and all the other demigods, having heard of the distress of mother earth, went to the shore of the Ocean of Milk. There they worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, who lies on the Ocean of Milk, by reciting the Vedic
mantras known as the Puruṣa-sūkta. While sitting in trance, Lord Brahmā heard the words of Lord Viṣṇu vibrating in the sky. Thus he told the demigods: “O demigods, hear from me the order of the Supreme
Person, and execute it attentively without delay. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who has full potency, will personally appear as the son of Vasudeva. For as long as the Lord moves on earth to diminish its burden by His own potency in the form of time, all of you
demigods should appear through plenary portions as sons and grandsons in the family of the Yadus, and your wives should also appear in that dynasty. The foremost manifestation of Kṛṣṇa is Saṅkarṣaṇa, the origin of all incarnations within this material world. Before Lord Kṛṣṇa appears,
this original Saṅkarṣaṇa will appear as Baladeva, just to please Kṛṣṇa in His transcendental pastimes.”*

The Bathing Ceremony of Lord Krsna

![[0047_SB-10-2-2.jpg]]
*Just after baby Kṛṣṇa turned three months old, mother Yaśodā saw that He was slanting His body in an attempt to rise and turn around. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, she arranged to observe the Vedic ceremony called utthāna, a bathing ceremony performed when a child is
due to leave the house for the first time. So Mother Yaśodā called together the other women of the neighborhood to assist her, and the brāhmaṇas joined by chanting Vedic hymns while professional musicians played their instruments and sang.*

Krsna Kills the Cart Demon

![[0047_SB-10-2-3.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: The demon Śakaṭāsura took the form of a cart, but baby Kṛṣṇa, lying beneath it on a bed, kicked His legs in anger and destroyed the cart demon.*

Radha-Krsna and the Principal Gopis

![[0048_SB-10-6-2.jpg]]
*In the Sanskrit classic Brahma-saṁhitā, Lord Brahmā, the first created being in the universe, states, “I worship Govinda, the primeval Lord, who resides in His own realm, Goloka, with Rādhā, who resembles His own spiritual figure and who embodies the ecstatic potency hlādinī. Their companions are Her confidantes, who embody extensions of Her bodily form and who are imbued and permeated with ever-blissful spiritual rasa.” The gopīs assist Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa in Their transcendental pastimes, expertly using their talents to increase the Divine Couple’s spiritual pleasure.*

The Abominable Behavior of Nalakuvara and Manigriva

![[0049_SB-10-2-10.jpg]]
*EN SB 10.2 1977: The two brothers Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva were great devotees of Lord Śiva, but because of material opulence they became so extravagant and senseless that one day they were enjoying with naked girls in a lake and shamelessly walking here and there. Suddenly the great saint Nārada
Muni passed by, but the two brothers were so maddened by their wealth and false prestige that even though they saw Nārada, they remained naked and were not even ashamed. Just to show them mercy, Nārada
Muni cursed them as follows: “These two young men, Nalakūvara and Maṇigrīva, are by fortune the sons of the great demigod Kuvera, but because of false prestige and madness after drinking liquor, they are so
fallen that they are naked but cannot understand that they are. Therefore, because they are living like trees (for trees are naked but are not conscious), these two young men should receive the bodies of trees. This will be proper punishment. Nonetheless, after they become trees
and until they are released, by my mercy they will have remembrance of
their past sinful activities. Moreover, by my special favor, after the expiry of one hundred years by the measurement of the demigods, they will be able to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, face to face, and thus revive their real position as devotees.”*

Krsna Blesses the Fruit Vendor

![[0049_SB-10-2-13.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018: One day, a fruit vendor came to Nanda Mahārāja’s house. Hearing the vendor call, child Kṛṣṇa took grains in His palms and went to exchange them for fruits.
But His palms were small and He was not careful to hold the grains tightly, so He
dropped many of them. The fruit vendor saw this and was captivated by the child’s beauty, so she accepted whatever grains were left and filled His hands with fruits. In the meantime, her basket of fruit became filled with jewels.*

Krsna and Balarama and the Name-giving Ceremony

![[0049_SB-10-2-5.jpg]]
*One day Vasudeva inspired Gargamuni, the family priest of the Yadu dynasty, to go to Nanda Mahārāja’s house in Vṛndāvana and perform the name-giving ceremony for Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma. To keep the ceremony
hidden from King Kaṁsa, Nanda Mahārāja requested Gargamuni to perform it in Nanda's very secluded cowshed. As Gargamuni cradled baby
Kṛṣṇa in his hands, he said to Nanda Mahārāja, “To increase the transcendental
bliss of the cowherd men of Gokula, this child Kṛṣṇa will always act auspiciously for you. And by His grace only, you will surpass all difficulties. Demons cannot harm the demigods, who always have Lord
Viṣṇu on their side. Similarly, any person or group attached to Kṛṣṇa is extremely fortunate. Because such persons are very much affectionate toward Kṛṣṇa, they cannot be defeated by demons like the associates of Kaṁsa. O Nanda Mahārāja, in His transcendental qualities, opulence,
name, fame and influence, this child of yours is exactly like Nārāyaṇa.
You should therefore raise Him very carefully and cautiously."*

Makhancora

![[0049_SB-10-2-6.jpg]]
*Kṛṣṇa would sometimes enter the house of a neighbor and steal curd, butter and milk from the pots in the storeroom. Then the cowherd men would find Him and angrily say, “Here is the butter thief! Better capture
Him!” But Kṛṣṇa would simply go on eating the curd and butter, and when He smiled at the cowherd men they would forget everything.*

Mother Yasoda Chases Krsna

![[0049_SB-10-2-9.jpg]]
*Mutter Yaśodā versuchte, Kṛṣṇa einzuholen – Ihn, den nicht einmal große Yogis mit ihrer Meditation erreichen können.*

Krsna Confronts the Baka Demon

![[0050_SB-10-2-14.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018: While the boys and calves were sitting on the bank of the Yamunā, they saw a huge heron as big as a hill. The name of this beast was Bakāsura, and he was a friend of Kaṁsa’s. The bird attacked Kṛṣṇa with his pointed, sharp beak. All the boys fell in despair. But Bakāsura didn’t know that
although Kṛṣṇa was playing the part of a child He was the original father of the universe. Kṛṣṇa caught hold of the two halves of the gigantic heron’s beak and bifurcated his mouth as easily as a child splits a blade of grass.*

Krsna Opens His Mouth and Shows His Mother the Universe

![[0050_SB-10-2-7.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: Once, Mother Yaśodā instructed Kṛṣṇa to open His mouth so she could see whether He had eaten dirt. She was astonished to see everything within the entire universe, including her very self.*

The Reunion

![[0051_IS-4.jpg]]
*When the gopīs saw that their dearmost Kṛṣṇa had returned to them, they became ecstatic, and out of their affection for Him their eyes bloomed wide. It was as if the air of life had reentered their bodies.*

The Deliverance of the Yamala-Arjuna Trees

![[0051_SB-10-2-11.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: Bound to the wooden mortar, child Kṛṣṇa proceeded toward the twin arjuna trees, which were actually the sons of Kuvera, in order to fulfill the prophecy of Nārada Muni. Although He was able to pass between them, the large wooden mortar stuck horizontally, and with great strength He pulled the rope tied to the mortar. The two trees, with all their branches and limbs, fell with a crash. Out of the broken, fallen trees came two great personalities, shining like blazing fire,
who bowed before little Kṛṣṇa.*

Aghasura Swallows the Cowherd Boys

![[0052_SB-10-2-15.jpg]]
*The cowherd boys entered the mouth of the serpent Aghāsura in a playful
mood, supremely confident that Kṛṣṇa would protect them.*

Radha Offers Flowers to Krsna

![[0052_SB-10-6-3.jpg]]
*When Kṛṣṇa disappeared from the rāsa dance, taking Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī with Him, the other gopīs said, “Certainly that particular gopī has perfectly worshiped the all-powerful Personality of Godhead, Govinda, since He was so pleased with Her that He abandoned the rest of us and brought Her to a secluded place.”*

The Rasa Dance

![[0053_SB-10-6-11.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: Kṛṣṇa expanded Himself into many identical forms to enjoy His rāsa dance with the gopīs. In the company of those supremely beautiful cowherd girls, who worshiped Him with pure devotion, Lord Kṛṣṇa appeared like a greenish sapphire locket in the midst of a golden necklace decorated with valuable stones.*

Krsna and the Gopis Bathe in the Yamuna

![[0053_SB-10-6-12.jpg]]
*After the rāsa dance, Kṛṣṇa entered the water of the Yamunā River with the gopīs in order to dispel their fatigue, and soon the Lord found Himself being splashed on all sides by His laughing consorts.*

Lord Krsna Kills the Tyrant Kamsa

![[0079_SB-11-2-5.jpg]]
*EN KB 2018 one-vol: While in Mathurā, Lord Kṛṣṇa dragged the demoniac King Kaṁsa from his high seat and threw
him down. Straddling Kaṁsa's chest, Kṛṣṇa punched the demon again and
again until he lost his life.*

Krsna and Balarama with the Washerman

![[0144_SB-10_2_10.jpg]]
*After Kṛṣṇa had beheaded the arrogant washerman, the Lord put on some of the garments that especially pleased Him, and the cowherd boys also took their pick of the fine clothes.*

The Killing of Dhenukasura

![[0145_KB1-20.jpg]]
*Genau wie Dhenukāsura endeten auch all die anderen Esel-Dämonen auf den Wipfeln der Palmen.*

Krsna, Balarama, and Their Friends Enter the Forest

![[0147_KB--211.jpg]]
*Five thousand years ago, Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, descended to earth in His original spiritual form and displayed His transcendental pastimes with His associates. Here Lord Kṛṣṇa (dressed in yellow), His brother Balarāma and Their cowherd friends enter the Vṛndāvana forest with their cows. The great sage Śukadeva Gosvāmī said, “The Supreme Personality of Godhead looked over the forest, which resounded with the charming sounds of bees, animals and birds, and which was enhanced by a lake whose clear water resembled the minds of great souls and by a breeze carrying the fragrance of hundred-petaled lotuses. Seeing all this, Lord Kṛṣṇa decided to enjoy the auspicious atmosphere.”*

Krsna Carries His Father's Wooden Shoes

![[Mad-2-9.jpg]]
*EN SB 10.2 1977: In any situation, Kṛṣṇa is always the infinitely powerful Supreme Personality of Godhead. But just to increase the ecstatic emotion of His intimate,
loving devotees like Mother Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja, Kṛṣṇa agrees to come under their control. Sometimes Nanda Mahārāja would ask Kṛṣṇa to bring him his wooden slippers, and Kṛṣṇa, with great difficulty, would put the slippers on His head and take them to His father.
At such times Nanda Mahārāja would exclaim, “My dear Yaśodā, just look at your offspring, Kṛṣṇa! See His blackish bodily luster, His eyes tinged with red color, His broad chest and His beautiful pearl ornaments. How wonderful He looks, and how He is increasing my transcendental
bliss more and more!”*
## Volume 3

Krsna Enjoys Lunch with the Cowherd Boys

![[0052_SB-10-3-1.jpg]]
*After selecting a pleasing location on the riverbank, Lord Kṛṣṇa and His friends opened their baskets of food and began eating in great transcendental pleasure. Like the whorl of a lotus flower surrounded by its petals and leaves, Kṛṣṇa sat in the center, encircled by lines of His friends, who all looked very beautiful. Every one of them was trying to look forward toward Kṛṣṇa, thinking that Kṛṣṇa might look toward him. Among the cowherd boys, some placed their lunch on flowers, some on leaves, fruits, or bunches of leaves, some actually in their baskets, some
on the bark of trees and some on rocks. This is what the children imagined to be their plates as they ate their lunch. All the cowherd boys enjoyed their lunch with Kṛṣṇa, showing one another the different tastes of the different varieties of preparations they had brought from home.
Tasting one another’s preparations, they began to laugh and make one another laugh. In this way they all enjoyed their lunch in the forest.*

![[0052_SB-10-3-4.jpg]]
*Brahmā said, “My dear Kṛṣṇa, Your name suggests that You are all-attractive. The attraction of the sun and the moon are due to You. By the attraction of the sun You beautify the existence of the Yadu dynasty. By the attraction of the moon You enhance the potency of the land, demigods, brāhmaṇas, cows, and oceans. Because of Your supreme attraction, demons like Kaṁsa are annihilated. You are the only worshipable Deity within the creation. Accept my humble obeisances until the annihilation of this material world. As long as there is sunshine in this world, kindly accept my humble obeisances.”*

On the grounds of these palaces were clear ponds fragrant with the pollen of many lotuses, and the Lord would enter these ponds and enjoy sporting in the water with His wives. As musicians, singers, and poets glorified Him, the Lord would squirt water at His consorts, and they would squirt Him back, laughing all the while. In this way He enjoyed Himself like the king of elephants in the company of His bevy of she-elephants.*
