# Cross-References & Connections
*How everything links together*
---
Srila Prabhupada's teachings are deeply interconnected. He quoted the same verses hundreds of times, explained concepts from multiple angles, and built understanding through repetition and elaboration. The archive reflects this.
> **In this article:** Backlinks showing all references · The 11,000-entry index · Embedded verses with highlighting · Clickable scripture references
### Backlinks
At the bottom of most pages, you'll find a "Backlinks" section showing every other page that references this one.
```
+-----------------------------------------------------+
BACKLINKS SECTION
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Linked mentions
-------------------------
ARTICLES
* Devotional Service
* Spiritual Master
OTHER REFERENCES
* SB 1.2.13
* Lecture, February 19, 1966
* Letter to Brahmananda, January 5, 1970
+-----------------------------------------------------+
```
For example, open Bhagavad-gita 4.34 and you'll see:
- Every lecture where Prabhupada quoted this verse
- Every letter where he mentioned it
- Every other book passage that references it
- Index entries that include it
- Wiki articles that discuss it
Backlinks are organized into sections:
- **ARTICLES** — Wiki articles that reference this page
- **OTHER REFERENCES** — Scripture, spoken content, letters
This transforms isolated reading into exploration. You find a verse meaningful, scroll down, and discover twenty lectures elaborating on it.
### The Index
The archive includes a comprehensive index with over 11,000 entries—topics, names, places, and concepts found across Prabhupada's teachings.
```
+-----------------------------------------------------+
INDEX ENTRY EXAMPLE
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Devotional service (bhakti)
-------------------------
Loving service to the Supreme Lord, the natural
function of the soul.
References:
* Bg. 9.14 -- satatam kirtayanto mam
* SB 1.2.6 -- sa vai pumsam paro dharmo
* Cc. Madhya 19.167 -- krsna-bhakti-rasa-bhavita
See also: Bhakti-yoga, Service, Love of God
+-----------------------------------------------------+
```
Each index entry shows:
- A brief definition or description
- Links to relevant verses, lectures, and letters
- Related entries for further exploration
Browse alphabetically or use the search filter. Large index pages include A-Z navigation for quick jumping (see [[archive/about/navigation|Finding Your Way]]).
### Embedded Verses
Throughout the archive, verses are embedded directly into pages. Rather than just seeing "Bg. 4.34," you see the actual verse—Devanagari, transliteration, synonyms, translation, and purport.
```
+-----------------------------------------------------+
EMBEDDED VERSE
+-----------------------------------------------------+
Bg. 4.34
----------------
tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya...
tad viddhi pranipatena...
==================================================
^ Highlighted portion relevant to this topic
+-----------------------------------------------------+
```
In compilation books (Siksamrita, Namamrita, etc.), relevant portions are **highlighted automatically**. You immediately see which part of the verse or purport applies to the topic at hand.
### Scripture References in Context
When Prabhupada quotes a verse in a lecture or letter, that reference becomes a link. Click it to see the full verse. This works throughout the archive—you're never more than one click from the complete context.
The same verse quoted in different contexts reveals different facets. Seeing Bg. 4.34 explained in a 1966 lecture versus a 1976 conversation shows how the teaching applies across situations.

> [!question] Frequently Asked Questions
>
> **Q: How do I see all pages that reference a verse?**
> Scroll to the bottom of any page and look for the "Backlinks" section. This shows all incoming links.
>
> **Q: Why are some backlinks under "ARTICLES" and others under "OTHER REFERENCES"?**
> Wiki articles are separated to make them easy to find. These are explanatory articles that discuss the verse in a thematic context.
>
> **Q: How does embed highlighting work?**
> When a verse is embedded in a compilation page, the compiler specifies which portion to highlight. This happens automatically when you view the page.
>
> **Q: Can I click on verse references in lecture transcripts?**
> Yes. References like "Bg. 4.34" or "SB 1.2.3" are converted to clickable links that take you directly to the full verse.
>
> **Q: How do I browse the index?**
> Go to the Index section in the sidebar. You can browse by letter (A-Z) or search for specific terms using the filter box.
>
> **Q: What if a verse I'm looking for isn't in the index?**
> The index covers major topics from the original book indexes. You can also use the search function to find specific terms across all content.

> [!abstract]- Technical Implementation Details
>
> **Backlinks Organizer**
>
> The `BacklinksOrganizer` module enhances Obsidian's native backlinks by separating wiki articles from other references. It creates "ARTICLES" and "OTHER REFERENCES" sections using DOM manipulation. A MutationObserver watches for backlinks container changes to handle dynamic content.
>
> **Embed Highlighter**
>
> The `EmbedHighlighter` module highlights specific text within embedded verses. Four input methods are supported:
>
> | Method | Syntax | Example |
> |--------|--------|---------|
> | Embed title | `![[path\|text]]` | `![[sb/1/2/13\|text to highlight]]` |
> | Inline code | `` `hi:text` `` | Place after embed |
> | Data span | `<span data-hi="text">` | Place after embed |
> | Paragraph numbers | `\|p1,3,6-7` | Highlights specific paragraphs |
>
> Text matching is case-insensitive and formatting-agnostic (strips markdown before matching). Uses Range API for precise highlighting that works across element boundaries.
>
> **Index System**
>
> Index entries are stored as markdown files with structured references and "See also" cross-links. The `AlphabeticalNav` module adds floating A-Z navigation for files with 50+ entries.
